New bill introduced in the CO Legislature that would pause the funding for wolf intro and re-allocate to state health insurance program. No effect on depredation claims as that comes out of a different spending bucket.

From the DenverPost:
Colorado lawmakers will consider pausing the state’s wolf reintroduction program for a year to reduce spending amid a massive budget deficit.

A bipartisan bill, made public Tuesday, would reallocate $254,000 that’s set aside for transporting more wolves to Colorado this winter and instead use it to help pay for a state program to lower health insurance costs. The bill will be heard during a special legislative session that starts Thursday to address the $783 million state general fund budget deficit caused by the federal tax bill.

The bill has broad sponsorship, extending from the Western Slope to the Front Range. But it was unclear if it would gain traction with lawmakers more broadly during the short session.

Under the bill, state funding for other aspects of the wolf program — like staffing, conflict minimization and compensation of ranchers for impacts to livestock — would remain in place. If implemented, the budget for the wolf program during this fiscal year, which runs through next June, would shrink from $2.1 million to $1.8 million.

CPW would not be permitted to use any of the remaining money for a new reintroduction round.

“I think the state would make a better investment in people’s health insurance right now, (rather) than spending money on more wolves,” said Sen. Dylan Roberts, a Dillon Democrat who is sponsoring the bill.

This is a good idea (finally), but what’s the point of reducing the budget if they’re just going to blow it and go over… they’re already like 3x the original budget

I can certainly get behind this. The state only needs to sell another 949,090 NR elk tags to to cover the deficit.
Sell wolf tags. $10,000 apiece. Plenty of Texas oil money would hit that. Disallow baiting, calls, and other aids and you could sell 100 tags per actual wolf.

It might not make much of a dent in the deficit but...

I’m wondering how hard it would be to tag one. Would 100 tags per animal decimate them or would you be lucky to even fill 1 in a thousand.

I’m always amazed at how many deer there are considering the volume of hunters.

I’m thinking there isn’t enough data to support a decision. Maybe draw tags for a while like moose is often managed.

Okay, so folks are supportive of the legislature stealing funding from wildlife agencies for other uses, as long as it targets the programs that they don't like? Is that accurate?

Kind of related to this:

Hey WyoBC, I think you certainly have a point but I viewed this proposed legislation as bit different. More so relates to an attempt to pause/halt the wolf re-intro by defunding it on a technicality of how the program is funded. No money coming out of CPW's budget. The money for re-introduction costs (i.e. capturing and releasing) comes from the Colorado general fund supported by a slew of various taxes i.e. CPW/Hunters are not paying for the re-introduction costs themselves. Various other costs for the wolf program like biologist, range riders, etc are provided through CPW but funded through non-license sales (i.e. the CO Wild wolf license plate). I don't think anyone views this as a solution to the actual deficit issues either.

This bill passed committee yday but had an amendment added that wolf re-intro could continue if other funding sources (most likely private donations) were secured.
At least this is my understanding. Welcome correction if someone is better informed than me.
