so i drew my 4th choice. my first three choices have roughly 30 tags on the leftover list. and my first choice was a higher point unit that i (one point) selected just to get another point knowing/thinking i had no chance for that one. i'm assuming because i didn't draw my first three choices that they were drawn in their entirety by others, is that right? so then it's hard to believe that some 30 hunters for one reason or another decided to not pay for or turn back in their tags.

anyone know if i can trade in my tag for another tag on the leftover list?
You can turn a tag back in and then buy any leftover tag. You’ll eat the cost of the license you turn back in. No trading.

You have to turn in the tag first, if it’s a popular tag it may get scooped up before you can get it and you’ve already turned in your other tag, plan wisely

To pick up a second bear tag or not... hmm.

Doubt I’ll be able to get anything I want, but to have my bear tag and a cow elk tag would be pretty sweet.

That's why I always laugh when people complain that there aren't any tags left. There have always been thousands available and thousands will go un-purchased.

They're probably qualifying that statement. For instance........yes, there are supposedly 50k+ tags available on the list (didn't count them).......but I'm only interested in one or two of those tags. So for me.......not much available. For someone else, it could be like Christmas.

You should try and call Colorado and ask them why this happened. I'm honestly interested.

Is there, or has anyone bought leftovers as a group?
Groups of up to four can purchase over the phone, but the CPW agent will have to speak to each hunter in the group during that one phone call. You are not allowed to make purchases for someone else.

It's a different list for each species. Some brilliant dummy will read the list you posted for elk, and think it applies to all species.

Example: the guy who thinks a unit specific tag can be used in an OTC unit.
Yes you definitely want to read through the regulations carefully as they are a lot to swallow especially if you are applying for multiple species and tags. Just wanted to let everyone know there are ways to get more than one tag

Is anyone putting any faith in the online sales this year? Hasn't their system crashed each of the last 4 years or something like that?

Every year it crashes in short order, and then, Poof, all the good stuff is gone. Their systems are not designed to handle these fire sales. Good luck.... you're gonna need it.

superthanks for the info! i am thinking about doing an exchange for one of several units that is showing 15-20% better success odds. from what i read per your link, at worst i get my original tag back if the other tags become unavailable. it sorta sounds like they do the leftover sale first and then they'll process exchanges so my hopeful tags may well be gone then.

my dilemma is that i hunted my same tag last year, albeit unsuccessfully. but that would let me rule out some areas i scouted and hunted, so as to narrow what i need to do this october. if i go into a higher success rate unit, i would be starting from scratch. not sure...

I believe they have to clear out your current tag first, or the system won't sell you another tag (assuming they're both List A tags). So, you do face the risk of losing the tag you turned in and also not getting the tag you hoped for if it's gone.

You can do the refund. I’ve done it several times for one reason or another. Just make sure you go to an office/location that can do it. I’ve gone to the regional office in south Denver and it’s been no issue either time. Have your license with you though.

The Leftover List was dated July 30, 2019.
Technically, people had one more day [July 31] to turn tags back in and still be in the 30 day window.

And there is also the medical returns too.

Some good tags still may be coming
