I’m at a bit of a crossroads right now. I’ve been feeling like it’s time to really commit to a career path. I’d like to be able to hunt quite a bit and make decent money as well. What are people doing, any recommendations or opinions would be great.

The guys I know who hunt whenever they want either own their own business, own a bunch of rental properties, or they are a lawyer or doctor.

Nurses earn very respectable pay and their schedules are excellent. My son is a flight nurse and he has enough time off to work two jobs and still hunt and fish a bunch. They never have to worry about having a job and every small town in America needs them. Solid career choice, especially if you are a male.

Firefighters have it pretty good. Usually very good pay, lots of time off with a couple of shift trades..etc

I will echo firefighter. I have a few buddies who do it, they all make good money (takes a couple years) and they have pretty awesome schedules. Lots of time off without taking PTO.

What kinds of things are you thinking about? What are you good at?

I’ve been thinking about construction management a bit. Helicopter pilot, airline pilot, Cop. For a long time I wanted to coach college football (I’ve been playing in college, just had to end that due to an elbow surgery), I also decided I wanted to be able to hunt more and coaching doesn’t lend much time to that.

I’ve always been very entrepreneurial, started little businesses all through high-school and a couple in college. I did sales and I was decent at that but I don’t love it all the time. Worked construction and didn’t mind that. I’m good with people and I’d say I’m a good leader. I get bored with doing the same thing over and over and I enjoy being active at work. I thought it would be cool to be a wildlife photographer and I love photography but there’s not much money in that at all. It’s been hard to commit because I have so many different things I enjoy and so many different ideas.

Construction management ain't it if you're looking for a bunch of free time. There is decent money to be made there though

Any commercial pilot has to rack up some hours before they even consider you. There is a push right now for fixed wing pilots, but it takes some doing to get the minimum number of hours. You can take the written portion of the basic pilots license anytime. Sporty’s offers a well liked online study course and sets you up with a place to take the test in person. With misc. books and suggested items it comes to less than $500. Our youngest thought he wanted to do this because riding in a plane is fun, so we paid for the Sporty’s course and learning the nuts and bolts wasn’t as interesting as he had hoped, and the direction changed.

Helicopter pilot would be even harder. I know a helicopter instructor and he said the young guys have a heck of a time building up flight hours unless they spray weeds or fly off a tuna boat looking for fish. Many military pilots also don’t have enough hours to be competitive for commercial jobs, but some do, so you’re competing against them for very few jobs.

My career has been in residential construction and I’d say that should be low low low on your list.

Get a job with a drilling contractor, the schedule is 2 weeks on 2 weeks off. (Patterson, H&P and Nabors are some major ones).

I was a fireman, retired. 24 hour shifts, worked a day off a day for 3 days and then off 4

Nurse in a women's prison now, work a week, off a week.

Firefighter - civil service testing. Big city be easier, lot more people testing though. Small cities and towns usually want you with state certified training, and paramedic training. So you save them money and go right to work.

Nursing - well, 2 years minimum college unless you have some of the general stuff out of the way.
I went to nursing school while working FT at the FD with trades and my days off. Got my bachelors after I retired.

Nobodies asked, how old are you and what do you do now?

If I was 18 today (or even 20-30), I would look very hard at commercial aviation. Almost any small regional will hire you with your proper license and and endorsements. Depending on hours, you’re captain in 1-3 years. All the major airlines are hiring multi engine pilots with a year of captain on the spot. Most have a schedule with half the month off. By the time you’re 30 (if starting right away) you’re getting a senior level schedule to build around your family. Great pay, great benefits, great time off.

I always thought fire fighter would be cool until I realized fighting fires is a small portion of that job. You’re involved in the most traumatic and tragic shit out there. Thank God folks can do it, and maybe that’s for you, but my mind ain’t right for it.

Yes - how old, what do you do, have you got a degree, what is a decent salary to you, , , ????

If you are paying attention, you see some trends. Most careers will have opportunities.

When it comes down to it, yer laying on yer deathbed - what do you want to have done/accomplished?
