Where to start buying points for my son?

Colorado and Wyoming both have great, affordable systems in place for youth hunters. If you’ve got a specific unit and game in mind, a bit of strategic planning can go a long way. It can be a really rewarding experience for both you and your kids, definitely worth looking into!

I'm planning to get at least Wyoming elk, antelope, and mule deer for my son. I may look into another state as well.

A lot of people here are complaining about the point system. I went antelope hunting in Wyoming in 2023 with three friends. I think our average points for our group application was 2.5. We drew tags and all got an antelope.

I have enough WY points that I think I can draw a decent WY goat tag and honestly my oldest daugther probably can too if we apply together. But I wanted to avoid it this year. I don't want to be a first-time hunter the first year that the corner-crossing stuff is playing out. I expect no small amount of drama to happen around that across the entire checkerboard strip in SW WY this fall and I'd just as soon avoid it especially with my daughter along. I'm hoping some of the future hunting pressure shifts into the checkerboards and maybe some of the units with bigger blocks of land become places where you can go with fairly light pressure and not have to deal with the corner issue. Or, just use those points on a private land hunt.

If you have the desire to hunt in states with points, on a regular basis, buy points.
On the flip side, you could have drawn Elk/Deer/Pronghorn this year in WY with no points at all. Yes it will be expensive, and the Elk won't have antlers, but filling the tags won't be an issue and JR will enjoy the experiences.

That’s what I was thinking. I’d be down to shoot a cow elk
