Build a 6cm, Buy 243 1/8 twist or go with a 6.5cm?

Sweet!!

Would you mind sharing bullet, impact velocity, and distance travelled after shot if you could?
I’m shooting factory 108 ELDM out of a 17in barrel doing around 2810.
Pronghorn shot at 190 went 20 yards
Deer shot at 220 went 20 yards
Elk shot at 300 went 3 yards
Bison shot at 120 yards and went 100 yards

Only had an exit on the pronghorn. Small entrance hole on everything but jello inside. I would not want to try and blood trail anything but if you put them in the vitals they go down pretty quick.

Just put together a Tikka in 8 twist .243 that Morgan with Class 3 Machining in the Dallas area shortened to 16” and threaded for me. Take off barrel I picked up from J&A. With UM 103 gr ELD X handloads it’s averaging 2850 fps. Quickly becoming my favorite rifle to shoot. Even cheap 100 gr Hornady Interlocks group amazingly well and make predictable hits out to 500. Only taken the ELDs to 800 on steel but they are deadly accurate. Have an 18” Carbon 6 6 CM cf barrel in the works. Will be a while and had to scratch the 6mm itch in the mean time.View attachment 749605

Unfortunately, the guy who ran the shop seems to have passed away per their website. I am in the Dallas area and looked them up after I saw your post.

I am trying to decide if I want my T3X Lite 223 chopped and cut, try to buy a take off barrel already threaded, or have a prefit made.

The time you chop and thread you're 25% of the way to a prefit. If you go profit you can also chamber in 223 wylde and seat your bullets longer and you can twist it 1:7 for those longer bullets. Im getting 2700 with 88 eldms, that's 6mm br territory...

This was a helpful thread to read through as I am currently asking the exact same question as @Brandon in the original post.
Currently have a tikka 223 diy project I’m working on getting some issues resolved with. Last couple years I’ve been hunting with the ridgeline 6.5cm ( I lucked out and got a shooter)
Live in Oregon so 6mm is a must.
But I want to put together a tikka light weight hunting rifle in 6.5 cm or 6cm. I reload 6.5cm so there is value in sticking with that. But the advantages of a 6mm seem worth the switch.

But with tikka still not producing a 6cm, the fast twist 243 seems to fit the bill.
Any downsides to the 243 over a 6cm? Are there any COAL issues loading the heavy 108 bullets ? Anyone using staBALL 6.5 powder for this ? Would be nice to not have to change out my powder dropper to switch calibers.
What is a good 243 brass?

Did the 6cm off a tikka action, it’s slick! But I love my 6.5cm tikka stainless, and it’s really hard to not grab that when it’s time to go hunt… I don’t think could go wrong with any choices just know most expensive will be the 6cm, least will be your other two, heck guys were getting the tikka roughtech from fleet farm for like 650 bucks comes threaded and all I was gonna buy one just for the action, but no fleet farms around

If you are going to handload Then 243 will work just fine I wouldn’t lose sleep over not getting a 6cm in a tikka, UNLESS you only planned on buying bulk factory ammo for the heavies. There’s a couple threads for the fast twist 243’s most guys are max COL with 108’s about 2.8-2.83”.
Peterson has brass for 243win and although I have not used any yet people seem happy that have.
I recall one person maybe 2 on here that have used SB 6.5 with adequate results.

Good luck

That said I have a tikka 6.5cm that’s by far my best shooting rifle, I have yet to put anything through that gun that out to 500-600 yards didnt impress me
