Well, um...most guys consider it bad form to ask what unit. If any of y'all are members on CWT feel free, I'll pass. If I had to guess I would say 6A based on the terrain, vegetation, and powerline, but that is strictly a wild guess on my part. His "a buck like this in this area" comment kind of backs up my hypothesis since 6A is not known for holding many big muley bucks, but it could be some other unit altogether. This just proves big bucks can turn up pretty much anywhere.
Sorry, was not trying to put you in a weird spot. I guess I'm a noob... I don't want to know his spot, just wondered what ~1100 square mile swath of Arizona this took place in.

As a new guy, I don't get it. I'm not trying to take anyones spot. Just wondering where other people are finding success.

Reminds me of a recent speaking engagement I saw by Steve Rinella.

Wouldn't be 6A, since it's not open Dec/Jan.

Yeah, I didn't think to even check that. So considering only units that are open in Dec. that have terrain like that at elevations with pines and powerlines running through it, would narrow down the possibilities quite a bit.

And no worries R_burg, people ask all the time on these forums and there is certainly no harm in asking, but it seems like more and more guys are getting reluctant to divulge any info at all about where they hunt. In a way I guess I don't blame them, good spots are getting harder to find as the population grows and huntable land shrinks. Members on CWT seem especially sensitive.

One picture and post of which unit can and does bring more pressure to any unit. With new ways to search the vastness of the internet it can resurface forever. In this day and age people are more likely to use false information anyway

Woohoo! 2017! After 364 days, I finally have another deer tag in my pocket. I just screwed on my broadheads and I'm readying my gear. Careless deer better watch out! By the time you smell my 4 day BO and hear me stifling a yell after stepping on a cholla ball, it's already too late!

Spotted a real nice 4x4, about a 28" spread and lots of mass. He was bedded just below the ridge top 10 yards from a large saguaro that I used for a marker. I got on the back side of the ridge, moved up even with him and topped over to come in from above with the wind in my face. I knew he had at least 2 does with him so I was moving in slow motion, trying to see him before he or they saw me. Made it to 30 yds and the extra 3 does blew up and took him with them. Oh well, find another one tomorrow. We did spot a herd of 15 javelina too but no luck on them either, the wind was all wrong.

Hope everyone's hunts are going well. I was in the field for 4 days before Christmas and 4 days after. Got to chase this bruiser for a day before he and his 16 does disappeared. Seemed that the snow we got changed their patterns quite a bit and we never managed to figure out where they moved to last week. The weather also made getting around rather challenging. I can't imagine what the roads are going to be like with all the extra rain from this last weekend.

My wife's first deer. An 18" wide 3x3 with eye-guards......she was PUMPED! Stalked in on him and his does as they were bedded. shot him at 45 yards when he got up. Had the kids there to share the moment.

Well done. What was the weather and rut activity like? Were you in the northern or southern part of the state?

Im loving this thread guys! IM hoping to do this hunt next year with any luck. Thinking of trying to get my old man to come along with the pointers and do a combo mule deer and quail hunt for a couple weeks. I recently got addicted to mule deer hunting after my first hunt in the colorado back country with getting lucky enough with a slammer. Thanks to a lot of help from you guys on here and especially justin spicher. Good luck to every one out their right now.

Hello all. Long time lurker, first time poster. I will be in SE AZ next week for mule deer and javelina. I hope to learn more about mule deer by trying them in the desert and this will also be my first "backpack" hunt. I've hunted the west before but always from truck camps or lodges/hotels. I figured this would be a good hunt to get me feet wet on. I will post some pics of I find anything of interest. Good luck to everyone. D

Great thread and congrats some great bucks posted up! I'm trying to figure out if I can pull one of these hunts off this month since I've got plenty of Southwest points and vacation time. I'd have to fly into Phoenix and hunt one of the central units from a rental car so I'm going to cram in as much research as I can this week to see if this is doable.

That's what I'll be doing next weekend. Good luck to everyone headed to AZ this January!

Me and a buddy are headed to Unit 27 next week. This will be the second year we have hunted the area and I can't wait to get back. I'll post some pics from our hunt.

Good luck to all!
