Rob,

I'm looking at the same general area. Based on my research so far, this tag is valid for muley OR white tail... Just FYI. Also, I will swap info with you if I go this year and that way you won't have to ask. Are there hard headed Germans in Cali?

This January I m planning to head down for my first time. Planning to leave Jan 10 thru the 17. Can't wait. Right now my plan is to hunt try to hunt the SE region for no particular reason other than that's where my focus on google earth has been. I do know some people that have been and when I told them my intention they said I was on the right track but I refuse to ask for a particular area. If anyone else plans to be in that area during those dates let me know
What units are you checking out?

Yes, its valid for Muley or Coues.

I am a local, but recently moved out here so I haven't hunted AZ yet. I am going to hunt the OTC archery hunt as well, but haven't had much time to scout... Still, I'm pretty excited to get out there!

I saw a shooter buck today... No deer tag! I also got to watch a lion stalk a buck and doe for about fifteen minutes. He was within 15 yards a couple times. It's gonna snow tonight... heading out in the morning with a houndsman. I love Arizona. The bucks are definitely chasing does already. Interesting enough, in this area I saw muley bucks rutting at the end of January last season. Better hurry... Ed F

i know this is kind of slap in the face question on these forums , but any help on narrowing down some unit choices would be great, not sure where to start. would like to take my son there next fall for his 16th birthday. would like to be a little picky(no scrubbers) on size but not expecting 190's behind every bush lol.

It depends a lot on what sort of experience you're looking to have. Packing in or car camping? Want steep and rugged or more mild terrain? Prefer spot & stalk, or can you tolerate sitting water all day?

Reality Check!

This is just a word of warning for you out-of-staters who are coming to AZ to hunt deer for the first time, particularly you guys coming from the east. Deer densities in AZ will NOT be anything close to what you are used to. In some places you will be lucky to see a handful of animals in a day. Not trying to discourage anyone, just setting expectations.

Carry on!

Unit 35B, Patagonia Mtn Area is high on my list. I wonder how many mules I'll run into in that country.

A handful of deer in a day is still better than the odds of finding deer down here. That just makes it even more appealing to me 😉

There are plenty of deer here and it is not uncommon to see 10+ bucks a day during December / January. The trick is finding one worth wrapping your tag around. Everyone has different standards, and there are deer to meet just about everyone's standards in every unit. I like the central units 20a, 20b, 20c, 21, 22. Some of those units are closed this year in December, so make sure you read the regs and are hunting in an open unit. As mentioned above, in 2 of the units I mentioned, you have a chance to find both Coues and muley on the same hillside. It makes for a fun hunt. Good luck all

Yep. This is the 1st year in many years that 21 didn't open in December. Wonder how many people went out on the 9th just out of habit!

I come from the east, will be there the 1st week in January. And I see 3x's the deer I see in the east. Guess it depends on where you go. Or who you know. Finding coues deer isn't a problem, killing one with the bow however is a feat regardless of rack size. Good luck to those going!

Hey all, I visit the Casa Grande area every year for Christmas. I am here now. I have been wanting to hunt down here but just not sure where to begin. Each year my family and I hike Picacho Peak and I have witnessed people glassing from there. Is the Casa Grande area worth looking into to do some homework for an archery hunt? Or am I looking at a several hour drive before I get into a decent area?
