That first elk was shot at a diagonal... probably 25 to 30 degrees facing. Simmons went through the shoulder blade and out near the last rib on the other side. Near bout the whole arrow was in elk. Other elk arrow went 25 yards other side and it was an upward grade, otherwise it would have been 50. Simmons is a huge head...physics would say it should penetrate less because of sheer cutting volume, yet it penetrated much deeper that the YouTube videos. It was sharp, and I believe the concave design played a roll too.

Even if the arrow is slightly skewed when it makes contact with hair and hide, the cut on contact head and the keen concave head with penetrate with little resistance, allowing the arrow to straighten as it passes through the animal, thus realigning the arrow with the head and pushing all the way through.

^^^^^^^This is where I believe you're grasping at an "idea" or "opinion" rather than actual results.

Actually physics and the principle of mechanical advantage dictates that many of the 2 blade heads have incredible penetrating potential...and they do.

Its not just the Simmons. I've seen many elk die to a arrow with 2 bladed head and the thing you notice is how fast the arrow is still traveling when exited on the other side. That pretty much tells you they penetrate with less effort than other designs....so penetration wise, those 2 blades are a winner.

IMO, there are too many factors that matter to make a definitive comment saying that any one BH design is "The Best"..... there are many good heads of different designs the work well.

TBM, I guess all of us of opinions other than yours, will have just respectfully agree to disagree. I would love to see some story's about your hunts and what you used to kill your two elk, how you came upon them. I came to Rokslide as a guy wanting to learn about elk and pick up some tips and information on how and where and what gear to use for camp and conditions I might encounter. I would really enjoy hearing about your sucess as a first and second timer as I am planning my first elk hunt for Septembe of '18. If you have already posted those elsewhere can you link me to them ? Thank you

I think a flatlander turning the 10% success into 100% would be a good topic... what those do who constantly get it done even though they only spend 10 days a year with the elk. I think it is a different approach from those who live with them year round.

So killing 2 elk makes one an expert?

I figure more than me would chime in...not to many would want to follow my pattern

What pattern is that? To have a giant ego and good story making skills? Because there's way more evidence of you lying then there is you being truthful. The only new elk hunter I K o who is so successful at the start but yet still don't take any picture of your kill! Sooner or later you will be banned from her I suppose too.

As an elk FNG I read this whole thread hoping for some good info as I try to settle on a broad head... I was disappointed. Good and bad reviews on all brands makes it a tough choice.

Its too bad bobby. Cant believe the mods have let this one and another similar thread go on as long as they have. If you need some one to point you in the right direction with Broadheads and arrow selection feel free to send me a pm.

Bobby, its easy....use the one i use <sarcastic grin>

Best advice; Think of your whole setup as a system. If you have a low energy setup...use a more efficient BH. With an avg to high energy setup, everything works just to different degrees. Its with these higher energy setups you need to then decide what is important to YOU, Examples; a big hole vs. short head that tunes easier vs. tapered head for better penetration...that sort of thing.

Its the reason why there are more than one Bh on the market.....

You need to possess really good sharpening skills fool with VPA's or Simmons. If you have those skills consider those two. Tracking elk is nothing like tracking deer on a blanket of leaves...I can be much more difficult. A big hole will help..two will help more.

Considering that all of the YouTube video shots I witnessed were double lung shots, yet they had to grid search on a few if them. There is no way you have to grid a deer traveling on a blanket of leaves.

I thought 2 for 3 was more like 66% but what do I know..
