AR = Everything

Use is general farm/ranch gophers, coyotes, Home Defense, hunting, etc…really want to try it as a 1-gun solution for a spring-fall cycle and evaluate from there. I got a hold of a bunch of 77TMK’s and load developing now.
A fellow rokslider posted about a convo with SWFA earlier this month. Sounds like a gen2 1-6 is in the works.

For a 1 gun solution, that would be pretty trick.

1. 1-8 LPVO vs Credo 2-10x36

2. What Suppressor (I would like something shorter that I could use on a 6.5 too if possible)
1. 16" barrel pairs really well with a 3-9/2-10/2-12.5/2.5-15x and an offset or 12 o'clock mounted red dot.

2. Suppressors are an entire world of give and take/compromises. Personally, I like low backpressure suppressors for general purpose/training. Shooting at things with ears or eyes I'd probably go with a traditional can 9/10 times. If you're carrying it a bunch, and not shooting it for long strings of fire, titanium would be nice. If you're shooting it a bunch and not carrying it so much that weight savings aren't a huge concern then Stainless steel or Inconel are perfectly fine.

Fun fact: flow-through and low backpressure are not the same thing. Flow-through is low backpressure but not all low backpressure are flow-through.

I have been looking at Huxwrx and US (I understand they are very different) and would like something that works on other guns. But I am open to suggestions.

.30cal can would be a good idea to keep your options open. I have a huxwrx 762ti, Allen Engineering AEM4-65, Silencerco Velos LBP 556, Rex MG7k, and a .22 can. Feel free to ask away.

The hux 762ti is pretty quiet to the shooter, but pretty loud to everyone/thing that is not the shooter. Especially with surfaces for the sound to bounce off of. Mirage can get bad fairly quickly as well, but that's titanium. Also cools off faster.

AEM4-65 is heavy but that sumbitch is the most quiet rifle suppressor that I own by a long shot.

This thread has been awesome and you have all been super helpful. I have a 16” DD that has just been waiting around for a purpose.

I am going to “try” a few things starting with spring hunting. I figure I can go to an SBR after I see what I like/dislike 2 more questions:

I have been intrigued by a 1-8 lpvo lately. Got to look through a 1-8 credo ffp. I have a hard time seeing where I would miss the 9 or 10x and could probably get all the range I wanted with the 8

I doubt you’d miss the extra magnification very often. One of my ARs wears a 1-8 ffp and I never feel handicapped because of the magnification range. My more hunting specific AR wears a 2.5-20 ffp and it rarely gets dialed above 7x-8x.

I’m an AR for everything dude, as stated in an earlier post. I use a 16” KAC topped with a NF NX8 1-8x. I had an omega on it for suppression, but recently switched to a Witt 223 can. No regrets. My barrel length is 20” and I have no issues shooting 5-600yds. It’s maneuverable and light enough to carry all day, even in the mountains.

Folks tend to over complicate setting up an AR. Get one, put an optic on it, suppress it and go shoot it. Figure out what does and doesn’t work and adjust accordingly. Just know it’s not as accurate as your trusty bolt gun. It was designed to hunt people, but it works well for animals.

I think folks tend to over complicate it because surprisingly often people tend to **** it up horribly, or tried that and aren't getting the results they were hoping. Also it's a hell of a lot cheaper to ask questions than it is to try every configuration for yourself.

What I have been thinking about the last few days is should go for a pistol - if the barrel is at least 16" and OAL is 26" you can put a stock on it and treat it like a rifle - but can also put a shorter barrel and brace if desired (My understanding is registered as pistol can go back and forth but registered as rifle can't turn into pistol)

Current back and forth is:

SOL MK1 (14.5" - I emailed to see if they would sell me a pistol in this length?) - yes it's expensive but if you try to piece together high end parts (inc their rail/upper/lower for good fit) it doesn't seem like a huge difference in price.

and back to PWS MK116 piston. Big benefits here is piston would keep action cleaner and supposedly less gas near face. Wylde chamber. Similar issue of them selling pistol in 10" and 14" is rifle. Maybe I will have to buy a 14" barrel either way if I want a pistol?

Since I want good accuracy mostly around 200yd but decent to ~400yd. Almost never rapid fire, no desire for home defense or "combat" use. Just a semi auto I can aim 10-20 rounds at a time out of, mainstream enough to get parts easy now and into the future.

It seems piston would be reliable enough. But some reviewers had issues with PWS - all the (more limited reviews) of SOL were all very positive. Sigh.

Whether it's registered as a pistol or rifle is entirely dependent on the configuration you purchase it in, assuming you buy a complete rifle and/or how the FFL fills out the 4473. If you purchase a stripped lower typically they'll register/transfer it as "other" which means you don't have to worry about it being a pistol or a rifle from a paperwork perspective. Only your current configuration determines it's status. Tax stamps are $0 now so you could just buy a complete "pistol" and SBR(form 1) it then you don't have to worry about any of the brace/stock back and forth bs.

If you plan to cross state lanes fill out and submit the 5320.20 to the ATF and you're back to exercising free will. I know some people that just fill one out once a year and put every state on it. Takes like 15 minutes.

As for piston vs DI if you want parts compatibility and availability or ease of operation & maintenance just get 2 DI setups.

SOLGW mk1 does seem good, and it probably is, but I'm not convinced a larger bolt release paddle, and texturing on the hand gaurd is worth the price they're asking.
