This thread has been awesome and you have all been super helpful. I have a 16” DD that has just been waiting around for a purpose.
I am going to “try” a few things starting with spring hunting. I figure I can go to an SBR after I see what I like/dislike 2 more questions:
1. 1-8 LPVO vs Credo 2-10x36
2. What Suppressor (I would like something shorter that I could use on a 6.5 too if possible)
I’ve been in this pretty deep lately.
1) scopes— I am generally a fan of the 1-6 because 6x does everything I need as far as I am likely to shoot anything with hair. My preference would be a 1-6 FFP with a reticle that is thick enough to see when you are at the low end. It doesn’t really exist right now. The Trijicon’s are generally pretty durable, but their reticle selection doesn’t do a lot for me. The new NX6 looks decent, but I don’t particularly care for tree reticles. The NX8 Is what Form and others recommend, but it’s a $2k scope. The SWFA 1-6 is FFP, and has (had) a decent reticle, but has been discontinued for a few years. It is roughly a 1/4 the cost of an NX8 and has a reputation of holding zero. The company told me recently they are working on a Gen II of this scope.
If you want something more than an LPVO, there is no need to look further than an SWFA 3-9.
2) Cans—See the duty and not-so duty AR can threads. A lot of duty cans are 12-15 oz, which is pretty heavy for my tastes. Many of the 556 titanium cans are not much lighter. The AB A-10 5.56 can is one of the options I’ve been considering of the duty cans. It’s about 10 oz and 5.5”, allows direct thread or a hub mount. And it’s about $450. I don’t have one, but I have a titanium Raptor 8 that I love.
On the lighter cans, the ZG Nano looks like a good option for a light-weight can for a bolt gun, but I would be cautious about using it on a gas gun. A AB Raptor 6 might also be a good choice and would be pretty durable for a TI can. The Ridgeback Rhino cans are interesting and there is a TI version that is $8-900ish.
