Another diy carbon fibre stock

After seeing how the first batch of epoxy dough with CF chop cured, figured it probably wouldn't hurt to hollow out the foam around the trigger well and pack it with a second batch. (1st photo) don't know if the CF chop made a difference but it is incredibly hard, much harder than I expected it to be. If I ever build another, I'll figure out a way to make the whole damn area around the action/grip out of this stuff. Watched a video of a well known stock company on YouTube do something of the same manner.

Also decided to add a 1/8" thick piece of aluminum about 1.5" long on the bottom of the but as a hard point to be drilled/threaded for a sling stud. Will do the same on the forend but it'll be 4" + for sling stud and or a pic rail.

I think I watched the same video. I am going to attempt to make a stock or 2 and plan to do the aluminum for drilling/tapping. I also plan to do the inlet area with a resin/microballoons/chopped carbon fiber fill. All these stock building threads have motivated me to give it a try.

Go for it! Take lots of photos! I like checking out all the different ways we all end up at a similar finished product!

I got the idea for the aluminum from the AG composite stock I currently have.

Box is in, used a single layer wetter out to bond the front of the box to the forend, used a scrap piece of the box as a shim with a fresh wetted out layer jammed in between the back of the box and the stock. It's in there pretty sturdy. A bit of room for the bedding block to float left and right when it is bedded to the stock/box. Next step will be to put 2-3 layers to connect the sides of the box to the edge or lip of the stock the protrudes out both sides about 1/8 of an inch, then epoxy dough to build it up even with the contour of the forend and grip.

Realized I cut away to much of the inlet for the bottom metal and when tightened down to the action it is counter sunk into the stock which won't work. After the above steps are complete I will sand down the bottom of the stock around the bottom metal approx 1/16 of an inch so the bottom metal is flush with the stock.

Forgot to take a photo after the sides of the box were laminated to the stock. At the same time over lapped layers on the top/back of grip area behind where the tang will sit.

Last night i got into the free form air epoxy dough and went a little ham. Built up the sides of the box and behind the tang. Will be Sanding it all and shaping before two final layers of carbon from the grip forward.

Another update.

After going a little crazy with the exopy dough and carbon fibre chop build it up in places, it might finally be ready for more carbon fibre. I though most of the flat surfaces were actually flat, they weren't. The foam core definitely had many dimples or low spots.

Took quite a few tries to form/shape a grip I am relatively happy with but I think it's there.

Imbedded a 4 inch section of 1/8" aluminum flat bar about an inch from the front of the forend for a sling stud and or pic rail.

What is your target finished weight for this stock? I have debated giving carbon fiber a go, but couldn't justify the mess for the weight savings of carbon fiber over a lightweight wood stock.

Currently with the bedding block it's 19 and a bit Oz. Not sure what the finished weight will be, looking for durability /strength in the grip area.
