Modified my Tikka stock

mddat, Did you have any trouble bonding to the center section? I put some JB weld on part of mine and it did not hold. I am trying another spot that was sanded to see if it helps. Or does the CF epoxy bond well? Thanks
Yes I sanded the plastic stock with 40 grit sand paper and also a bit of scoring with a utility knife then wiped with acetone

After all the carbon was laid I put on 3 thin layers of epoxy as a top coat. Gave it a wet sanding then a sponge paint job and added some clear coat. Finally I shaped and glued on a flip flop recoil pad and cut down an old arca rail I had laying around and attached it

I wanted this to be ultra light stock and I’m pretty happy with how it turned out, not sure how long it will last but I can always fix or add more layers if need be. This will be going on a .243 I have but I’m waiting on my scope to show up to shoot it, I’ll also be shortening the barrel to 18”. Hopefully I’ll get out in a couple of weeks and see how it does.

What kind of foam board are you using?

Well I sawed my stock into 3 parts, so I guess its go time. On your second build did you use the same CF from Amazon? Looking to order materials now, will 8oz and 4oz epoxy do 1 stock no problem? This epoxy does not eat the foam? Thanks

No, on the second stock I used West systems 105 epoxy and 206 hardener. As for carbon fibre I ordered a yard of 3k carbon fibre. I think I’m going to try some 6k carbon sleeve on the next one though

A little update, I put a Trijicon Credo 3-9x40 in sports match rings on the rifle.

I’ve had a hard time getting a decent load for it. I’ve tried 4-5 powders with 4 different bullets and not much shot well. The 108 elite hunters shot around 8” groups which was the worst by far but I finally settled on 108 ELDM and RL17. That combo has shot a couple 12 shot groups around 1.5 inches which I’m completely happy with at this weight.

I ruled out some other possible issues by putting it in a factory stock and also switched out the scope and rings to make sure those weren’t the problem which they aren’t. I also added some pillars and bedded the action. I’m pleased with how the rifle feels and handles recoil overall.

That said I’m already thinking about the next project
