30-06 limitations or does it not have the “cool factor”

Elite, bullet weight versus bullet length are separate factors with respect to stabilization.

However if those 220 gr bullets you have shot are spitzers of sleek design then shouldn't be a problem for you. Typically 220 gr bullets for the '06 in the traditional sense are going to be a semi spitzer or round nose. A 190 gr just about anything should be great in any '06 with 1-10" twist.

For instance my 35 Whelan Ackley Improved shoots Hornady 250 gr spire points and Speer 250 grain Hot Cor spitzers very well with 1-14" twist, along with the mega-long, per se, 250 gr Barnes Original X bullet. However, Barnes discontinued the 250 gr X because it would not stabilize consistently in the standard 1-16" twist most factory Whelen guns have, when those would otherwise stabilize the 250 gr Hornady or Speer bullets.

Agree, limited magazine capacity is a factor to consider. Above said 35 Whelen AI with 25" bbl holds 5 in the mag, 1 up the spout of the 200 TTSX at 2940 fps with IMR4064 or 3030 fps with Power Pro Varmint. Now that I think about it, I could drop a good number of ounces and not handicap myself by shiny standards by loading just two in the mag.

I've seen all the hype about the Creedmore and PRC. If I had the choice for elk sized game there is no doubt in my mind I'd grab the 06! Everyone says how great the PRC is for long range shooting but I don't see it! The PRC drops a whopping 26" at 400 yards and 48" at 500 yards. I wouldn't exactly say that is flat trajectory for a slim 140 grainish bullet!

An 06' with a 150 grain bullet drops around 19" at 400 yards and 38" at 500 yards. That's with a slightly heavier bullet!

Nice to see some like minded folks. Can't even visualize, but a suppressor on an '06 with an 18" bbl, how cool would that be to start a thread about.

The 30-06 is a fantastic cartridge that is also very accurate. I use nothing but 165 gr. Accubonds or Partitions in my 30-06 and they chronograph at 2940 fps out of my Ruger 1B with it's 26" barrel. Love the round love the rifle. I use it on everything from coyotes, antelope, deer, black bear, and elk. I sure wouldn't be afraid to use it on a moose, mountain goat, or sheep hunt if I ever get lucky enough to draw a tag. I only have a 4x Leupold fixed power scope on my Ruger but it sure is a shooter. Longest shot on a game animal is a dandy antelope buck right at 500 yards. It worked and worked very well.

If Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho are ever able to finally get the grizzly bear delisted and I was able to draw a tag, the 30-06 is the rifle of mine that I would use. In 2019 I killed a beautiful bear above the Arctic Circle in Alaska hunting with OVIS OUTFITTERS. On that hunt I used my 280AI, but if the stars align again it will be the 30-06 all the way.

I bought my Uncle's Husqvana, light wgt. Kinda vintage. He bought it from a friend who originated frm MT. He killed elk with it. Uncle shot targets, go figure. But, my cousin killed black bear & moose with it. As said in this thread, '06 does it all. But, if I had a grand plus laying around I wouldn't mind have new & shiny. lol

I went a little nuts on my 3006 build. It’s not a saami chamber either. But it’s still just a 30 cal bullet behind 56 grains of powder.

Nice pic. So is it an '06 or not?

Two things...

1) If it's not a SAAMI 30-06 chamber, it's not an '06... Ackley Improved '06 maybe? Alright, maybe a long throat, but that would still be an '06 chamber.

2) I wanna know how you got the bullet behind the powder.

1: LRI cut it with a Serengeti reamer, they recommended it being that I was hand loading. My understanding is it’s a standard 3006 chamber with some throat geometry changes. The throat is not long, nor is it maximizing the case capacity, but it shoots extremely well. I’m shooting 180 and 185 bergers out of it.

2: Too much time on my ass caring for infant.

Once you get to well tuned 30-06 and really good handloads, my friend, it ain't about the gun anymore. Maybe the rifleman rather. I'd take a 30/06, a 284/06 or a 277/06 any day for hunting purposes. Call em what you like. They can be tuned and blueprinted with great results.

I think an 06 will be my next rifle. Gunna try and run 200 class bullets with it. Anybody have experience with this?
