Did a little more research on the 25-300WSM, and apparently it's also called the 25 Pronghorn. A guy on shooter's forum had one built specifically for the Berger 115s, and his numbers are pretty impressive. It doesn't mention his barrel length, and I'm conservatively assuming 26".
  • 62.8gr N560 with cci250 (LRMP)
  • Necked down Winchester 270 WSM brass
  • 2.972" COL
  • 3,440 avg. velocity
Subtract 200fps for 18" barrel and a guy is still potentially slinging 115s at 3240. I'm guessing the 130s could still land around the 3,000 mark with some load dev.

Hell's Bells, after looking at 140 VLD and 145 ELDX in .270 WSM, I may just go that route. Guy should get damn close to 3,000 even at 18" barrel with a lot less headaches. Could always get new barrel later to play around with 25-300.

Just keep the 25-284 and add another Tikka to the stable. :)

I did a simple calculator of the .27 145gr at 3000 vs the .25 134gr at 2850.
The 25 catches it at 500 yards.

But the 270 has way more energy. Pause...

Just kidding!!! Thanks for sharing man, and I just ran them at 500 and they're virtually the same. I hate physics. Like @wind gypsy said, finding a unicorn is tough (foolhardy), and guys have been looking way longer than me. Just looking for a solution for a problem that doesn't exist or maybe looking for an excuse for a new rifle. LOL!

My 26” 270wsm with 140bergers at 3340fps with h1000 thumps whitetail pretty hard. But my 18” 25sst running 131s at 2900 with h1000 still beats it significantly in regards to wind drift at any range. Also at 250 yards and under the .277 140bergers grenade the vitals heavily and do not exit. They kill well for sure but I prefer having the .257 131s as they have always exited for me. I prefer exits so I have blood to track in the thick thorny brush if needed. Even when my 25sst barrel was at 26” with a lot more speed the 131s still exited from 100-630 yards.

I’ve thought about the 25 115s also but they drift in the wind much more than the heavies and don’t have that much difference in drop. The 100gr Nosler BTs grenades on impact at 3570 in a 7 twist. The only light 25cal hunting bullet I liked was the 90gr absolute hammer at 3780. It’s very flat shooting. But monos are pricey and have a lot of wind drift with the lighter for cal bullet weights.

If you want a new rifle, by all means, I am in full support!
I would look at the 6.8 western over the 270 wsm. Spitting those heavy 27’s looks cool(er)…. Unless you are planning to do a custom spine rate barrel. That’s a 243 vs 6creed. Potato potahto

It's sure fun to talk about and research if you geek out on this stuff (guilty).

6.8 western has capacity of 74 grains. The 270 WSM has 79-80ish.

A fast twist 270 WSM "should" slightly outpace the 6.8 Western all things being equal.

The Berger .277 170 EOL has a BC of .662. Assuming 3,000 MV (24" or 26" barrel) at 500 yards.

2419 -2.2 .8

Once you get beyond 500 yards, a guy can take a closer look and see who's gaining and losing. However, as I've learned, with BC as the constant and similar MV, the cartridge doesn't really matter. What becomes more important is how many hoops you gotta jump through at the bench and how much recoil you want.

The cartridge doesn't matter, down range. The same bullet at the same velocity, will have the same performance down range. The only place where cartridges matter is on the recoil pad end. More powder to get more velocity means more recoil.

When choosing cartridges, it would be best practice to back engineer from the desired maximum range with the desired bullet to find the velocity required at launch to be at or above the minimum velocity requirements for the bullet. Then match your cartridge choice to the muzzle velocity needed. If you only need 2600 fps MV, why choose a cartridge that gives you 3000 fps MV with that bullet? I understand that sometimes you need that bigger cartridge with the higher MV potential so that you can afford the velocity loss from a shorter barrel.

Accuracy international maybe?
I really doubt he meant Ackley improved but if he did I'd like to know the details. I always thought improving a creedmoor case wasn't worth the effort. It's already pretty optimized for what it is.
Same went through my head but accuracy international wouldnt be a gasser and same thought on the ackley part. Curious what the response will be.
