2026 Cold Bore Challenge Q&A Thread

Yikes. Not sure how I missed this but all my stuff is still packed up from the move!

Need to dig the rifle out and go find somewhere to shoot here asap!

Okay here's a question

For me my first shot was with trekking poles for support nothing else. I'm wondering for my second shot if I can add my pack as additional support and have it still be within the spirit of the challenge as I know my MER with that support system are beyond my capabilities and at that point I feel figuring out the next step to increase probability of hit should be found. Thoughts?

I think this is what it's all about, man.

Almost everyone is shooting prone with support and claiming ranges to be the most competitive they can be on points.

Hardly any of us have any business shooting over 600 at animals, especially in wind.

I did the prone thing the first year but last year I shot off a pack and poles and declared 475 because I knew that was a stretch and I wanted to push myself whereas a prone supported shot is business as usual for me.

So I understand that and with regard to this target this range and this rifle, my hits are 9 out of 10 to 10 out of 10 laying prone with a rear bag. Boring in fact hence why I decided to shoot with nothing but sticks. Now I think perhaps there should have been a step between prone to sticks with a sticks and pack in between. So that'll probably be my focus after the challenge and see if I can work my way up to hits with sticks only.

My MER goes from around 300 seated on sticks to 475 seated with sticks and with the bag in the back due to the reduction of my wobble zone.

Well I went out a couple evenings ago, set a target in moderate wind and by the time I was at my shooting spot it was blowing 20+ and I realized I'd set the target directly in line with the setting sun. Neither of those inspired much confidence nor would be conditions where I felt comfy taking a poke at a critter. This mornings conditions and results inspired much more confidence.

After going 1/2 at 550 and with the CBC complete I had to sling a few at the 850 (?). Couldn't get a consistent range (841? 855?) and was between 5.9 and 5.8. Had a couple give it a hair cut so I dropped to 5.8. Love that delayed 'ping'...

Moving to a much more "long range practice accessible" area this fall for work, so if I'm not shooting this challenge next year at 650 minimum someone slap me!
