2026 Cold Bore Challenge Q&A Thread

We need a photo contest style vote for some awards. I suggest the Whallopp award (impressive performance with a big cartridge), the Piss-ant award (impressive performance with something small), and maybe the Shoestring award (impressive performance with a budget or non long range oriented setup).

I don't have prizes to donate, but I'm invisioning this as just a fun thing. I suppose I'm by default volunteering to put the polls together, if there's interest.

I’d nominate your spot for most scenic shooting location. That draw/canyon/coulee/holler? looks so peaceful.

😂😂

Would the Wallop award be a separate category than the Authority award? I’m still trying to understand all this podcast talk

The photo contest-style polls have to have pre-selected finalists with a limit of 10.

Maybe the most impressive moderator/rokslide employee gets an Authority award? 🙂

I think we could narrow down the nominees to well under 10 per category.

Edit: on second thought, adding an authority award probably is self reporting more than I'd like to about how much rent free real estate a certain podcaster occupies in my head.

You’re busting me up @eric1115

Hey, we just had a wind advisory issued for tomorrow IMG_2533.png

I’m guessing if I shoot around sunrise, I’m probably gonna be doubled the wind value that I was today.

But being that the best I can do in this challenge is 50% I don’t have much to lose and last year I had a situation where I had to shoot in high winds and I made the shot on a deer.

So I’m thinking of going for it.

I’ve got hash marks in my scope for every 10 mile an hour of wind, but any of you guys wanna run the numbers on what my Windrift would be at 500 yards with the following

115-grain 6mm DTAC (G1 BC 0.588) at 3,100 fps @

20mph
30mph

If the wind is typical up there, it’s gonna be either 90 degrees to the target or 45 degrees coming into the target towards the shooter.

AI could do it but you guys are more fun and prolly more accurate

I think that much wind would blow your cardboard target clean outta eastern Idaho.

But if you wanna send it, shooter app tells me you should hold 1.5 mils for true 90deg wind. Can’t wait to see you nail it!IMG_1191.jpeg

@43.6N thanks man! Ya I don’t own any steel so I’m taking an extra post and zip ties.

So if I’m understanding, if I’m in that 20-30mph, I need hold here

IMG_2534.jpeg

And if the wind ends up coming at me in that left to right direction but at 45 degrees, cut my hold by half?

I don’t have a Kestrel but do have a wind meter plus there’s a wind farm 1/2 mile away so the windmills show the wind direction on a macro scale pretty good

Barrel always points to the center crosshairs, but the wind blows the bullets off center.
Wind coming from the right, will blow bullets to the left.
So you point the barrel (aka crosshairs) into the wind to make the hit. So in this case, the crosshairs need to be upwind of the target by 1.5mil.

@43.6N
Surprisingly, when I got up there this morning, the wind was about the same as yesterday. I was getting 5 to 15 mile an hour on the wind meter as I set up the target. But it was switching directions which was totally different than yesterday.

I threw up a makeshift wind flag (nothing in the rules that you can’t) and then when I got to my shooting position, I watched it for a few minutes and it was switching directions 180° at some point. So I just waited for a lull and torched off the little 6UM. Nailed it!

If you go to my video, post number 15, you can see the dust cloud blowing left while the wind flag is blowing right. And it was similar at my shooting position too.

I ended up holding “3/4 of a bar” (What Swaro calls their wind hashmarks) which was about double what I held yesterday and about half of what you and I talked about last night on here. I think if those winds would’ve been in the 20s to 30s like they were supposed to, your calculations would have dead on.

So I finished at 50%. I just gotta learn to read the wind better, and stay under 500.

Good luck everybody on your shooting. This is sure a lot of fun even though I have to drive almost an hour round-trip per shot.
