7 SAUM, same rifle set up as last year's challenge, shooting 175 berger eol at 2975 ops.
Defiance AntiX, Proof barrel, Salmon River Solutions ti brake, and a Manners EH1 stock.

Shot #1 Hit. Temp around 48 degrees, with a 13-16 3/4 value wind from left to right. My apologies for the shakey video and poor audio quality.

Shot #2 Miss. Temperature around 52 degrees, with 12-17 3/4 value wind. The wind was a little bit trickier today. I dialed .25 moa more than last week, due to shot being a couple inches low. The down draft coming over the hill must have have had less effect on the bullet today.

Day 1: 602 yards, DA 7300, wind 7-10mph varying from L to headwind to R and back
With the terrain and conditions, on a live animal I would have opted to not shoot and move in closer in this set up, but in the spirit of the challenge I wanted to push myself a bit. After myself and two other shooters hit high on this set up and analyzing the terrain, I think there was an updraft from a coulee about 500 yards out that none of us took into account.

IMG_4751.jpeg

Day 2: 600 yards, DA 5900, wind 9-11mph from L to R. Again, another day that I would’ve opted to move in closer on an animal due to the wind, but again good challenge!

Day 1
Sunny and 80, wind 7-10 mph coming up the draw towards us, but 9 o'clock through another draw 400 yards away. Dialed elevation and held 0.6 mils left. Missed high, and a little left (hard to tell from the video). The two other in my group also missed high and we suspect there was some updraft none of us accounted for.

1749995933406.jpeg

Day 2
Sunny and 80., wind 10-16 mph at 9 o'clock through the drainage we were shooting across. Dialed elevation and held 0.5 mils left and missed right. I underestimated the wind from where we were shooting from both from topography on the small, but slightly shielded rise we were on as well as the vegetation we were in. After seeing my body position in the photo below, that also might've contributed to my miss right. Once the challenge was over, I shot 4/5 with a 1.5 mil left hold which confirmed the wind at 16 mph.

1750109273100.jpeg

Despite making a 600-yard cold shot the week leading up to the challenge, it was in calm conditions and simple, familiar terrain. My misses highlight how difficult it can be to make first-round hits in broken, unfamiliar terrain with significant wind, and why this kind of practice and emphasis on first-round hits is important for hunting.

I would not have taken 600-yard shots in a hunting situation with the wind conditions on either day, and my misses confirm that. However, in the spirit of a challenge and for the sake of learning, I'm glad we pushed for 600.

Thanks to everyone who worked to put this challenge together from organizing it and the generous prize donors to the folks who participate and put their shooting to a realistic test.

Sorry for the wonky video I was really fighting my magview this morning.

Day 2 625 48 degrees sunny with smoke haze. Very slight breeze from behind my position.

Miss? Hit? The shot clearly is off the plate but as I said above its a 9 inch plate
20250619_101646.jpg
20250619_101735.jpg

Im 100% good with calling it a miss as I did not put it within the plate but it is clearly within a 10 inch circle. Im good with bowing out at this point and going back to shooting more than 1 round but it probably should be recorded in the stats wrap up as a hit. Thoughts from @Justin Crossley?

Day 3 77 degrees gusting wind. Sunny
Justin called my second shot good so I moved out. Target was at 698 today and I absolutely got humbled. The wind was 8 to 16 mph and was from different directions at the Target and shooting position. I ended up not calling enough wind after going back and forth on how to handle the conditions and my shot landed right of the plate. This would not be a shot I would take hunting in these conditions.

Day 4 79 degrees and gusting wind again. Again at 698 and again a bad wind call and a miss. Once again wind rules and this is not a shot id take in the field.

Small consolation since the challenge was over I slightly redeemed myself with 3 for 3 on the steel to the left of the challenge plate after correcting for the wind. Love this challenge but was pretty happy to get to shoot a few more rounds today.

My second qualifying shot was a miss so I guess I am done! Pretty disappointed as I felt great letting it go. The wind was blowing pretty good and a little gusty. I didn’t play the wind because where I was at the wind was behind me and a little from my right side. Once we got to the target it was blowing pretty good at almost a 90 degree angle. I was shooting over a creek and the target was set up in a cut coming off the creek. Pretty sure the wind was doing some funky stuff. Lesson learned and one of the big reasons I do this challenge. Thanks Rokslide.

Qualifying shot 1: Hit
Qualifying shot 2: Hit
MER 700 Shot 1: Hit
MER 700 Shot 2: Hit

Cartridge: 7 PRC
Rifle: Bat Vampire, ts customs stock, benchmark carbon barrel, Hawkins bottom metal, trigger tech trigger, Nightforce rings and scope, Ti-Pro Break.

Ammo: Handloads, Peterson brass, fed 215 primers, h1000, hornady 175 eld-m, velocity 2984fps.

Qualifying Shot 1 @ 600 yards: Brought the 7prc out this year. This rifle is boringly predictable in a good way. Got lucky with conditions this morning. Smoke from a fire kept things cooler than normal, 75 degrees, zero wind. Hard to beat that. Shooting position was low kneeling tripod. The rrs tripod and anvil ball head is a little heavy, and a little awkward to pack being so long, but worth all of the hassle for the stability and speed of set up it provides in the field. Dialed my dope, got a good wobble zone, and got the hit.
IMG_8018.jpeg

Qualifying shot day 2 at 600 yards. 50 degrees this morning, 1 mph right to left wind. Another day of perfect conditions. Revic binos called out 1/10th mil less elevation than yesterday. Dialed, got a good wobble, got the hit.

MER 700 - Day 1: Hit!

Temp was 50 degrees again this morning. Mirage at 700 yards was boiling slightly left to right, maybe 2mph. Had a 2-3 mph wind in my face. I held roughly 1/10th mil left. Got a good wobble and got the hit. Hit about a 1/10th left and high. Wind down range wasn’t doing much left to right, wind in my face must have been the value wind to account for. Always learning.

MER 700 Day 2: Hit!

Temp was 57 degrees this morning. Air seemed a touch heavier than it has been. No wind. I forgot my revics this morning. I keep a hand made bdc yardage strip that covers half my turret for reference. It has been awesome for shots 600 and under in the field when you don’t have time. I dialed 700 and it was true this morning. Got the hit.

Day 1 - 518yards - Hit
Sunny - 75-80degrees. Downward -9degree angle. Generally calm with a right to left breeze and a strong thermal up the south facing slope. (Shot and missed this same spot last year underestimating the wind effect here despite the apparent calm conditions). A year later I held right and lower third of the plate. Position - prone with LS wild 3s bag for rear support.

IMG_1598.jpegIMG_1601.jpeg

Day Two:

New spot. 524Y , -7degrees down angle, 90F. Position was seated behind a boulder with front bipod on the boulder, rear bag under stock and backpack overlap. Felt very stable.

Wind was minimal but there were a lot of different thermals going on. Shot was down one canyon and kinda across another where two met. I didn’t feel confident in what I should hold if anything for the wind, but decided there was decent up drafts at play and maybe a light left to right, so I held bottom left of the plate. I thought I missed after the shot and was thrown having not heard the ring on the plate. Even re-watching the video at first I couldn’t quite tell what happened. I figured the plate would have probably fallen off the rocks when hit. However upon walking up it was in fact a hit - high left and now the video makes that more obvious. I think it being wedged nicely in the rocks prevented the ring sound on the plate and the rock dust off the bottom was the splash blowing that was confusing me. Apparently the low hold was good but I could have held center low instead. Either way I am happy to go two for two this year.

  • Wind - 3 MPH read at shooter's position from 0700 with the kestrel. The wind travels more down slope at 0900 along the trajectory, but was so light today I didn't factor it in much. Turns out I should have. Held L0.5 MIL. Should have been closer to L0.7 MIL.
  • Apologies for the shaky video, I baby the swaro when I can and wanted to keep it out of the rain. I use the truck for certain types of hunting and would use it as a shooting platform if the opportunity presented itself. Buddy shot a bear from his tailgate a few years ago and NRL Hunter has stages that use vehicles as supports/shooting platforms.

Day 3 took awhile to get to due to life but I decided 775 seemed like a feasible distance. I hit about 12" low of center missing the target completely. The next day I looked at my calculator and I entered my target incorrectly so hopefully I can make up for it tomorrow and make my final shot.
Day 4 complete. 775 is definitely out of my MER. lots more wind than I could detect cross canyon. Missed my cold bore and both follow up shots.

I'll post a target picture when I go repaint the target before my next shot. I lost part of my target stand on the way and used a stick, found part of an "arrow head". Prone with pack and molinator for rest, homemade rear bag. Aziak Ridgeline with Leica Geovid R 10x42 and phonescope for the video. Pictures and video commentary by my lovely wife.

Day 2. 610yds.
Hit but my video stopped.....
Today was windy. My wind meter said average of 11 and max of 18 from over my left shoulder (-140). I set the wind direction best that I could on my Strelok app. It called for 3.7mil up and -.78 to my left. I decided to have faith in my app and held best I could. Saw the target swing and heard the smack. Target picture is day 1 impact. I repainted the target and hung it in a tree so I can still shoot as the corn gets tall.

Day 2 re-shoot at 603 yds.
Missed
Average wind was 11mph according to my kestrel. I think I held too much wind at .5mils. Since my first shot was a miss I'm out for shooting beyond 600. (I'm planning on trying anyway for funsies). If you keep watching the video I shot again with no wind hold and hit. I think the wind was mostly straight at the target.

Day 1
600 yards
A forecast 5-10 mph wind turned into a full on dust storm through the afternoon. Consistent 15-20mph on the kestrel. The dust storm had started to settle a bit on the drive up though.

I had intended to shoot from a downed log or some rocks but with the wind just went for prone over the pack with a LS wild mini tacky as a rear bag.

I tend to under hold wind so I made a 1.2 mil hold. I thought I might be overestimating it a bit, but nowhere near as much as it actually turned out to be as I was way off on adjusting for the wind angle (I basically didn’t account for it being mostly a tailwind…). Note the dust actually goes right too at impact…

.5 mil would have been a better call.

Had to shoot today to have a chance at 4 shots. Will try to pick a better day for shot 2 and still shoot from something other than prone.

Day 2

Similar wind except a little more south. I shot across the range at an angle and held left edge of the plate. Missed off the left edge of the plate🤦‍♂️

Day 1 2025. This is my 3rd year in the challenge. I took two long range shooting classes during the past year which really helped with fundamentals, natural point of aim, and positional setups.

300 WSM Tikka factory barrel with TiPro 4 port brake, Rokstok, Maven RS 1.2 MIL in UM rings and loaded 200.20x Berger at 2800 fps.

Claiming MER 725-750 yards so qualifying at 590 yards
Slightly Overcast 6:00 am 55 degees per Kestrel with DA of 5440. No noticeable wind, I figured there was some downdraft in the middle of the canyon

Using a Spartan Javelin bipod that I carry on my pack belt and also had a Molinator bag and Jellyfish. I carried both bags last year and used them to shoot my elk at 440. Maven Rangefinder, SG scope and action cover.

Shooter app called for 3.3 Mil of elevation and 0.1 Mil left. I dialed 3.3 and held just left of center by an inch or two.

I put a piece of cardboard behind to help figure out where the shot went if I missed. 12" gong painted black with a 10" white circle painted.

Good shot execution and I stayed on target through the shot, I saw the dirt fly from behind so would have known it was right. I believe I needed to be a little firmer vertically on the rear bags. That has been harder for me since going to the Rokstok compared to a stock pack and foam pad I had on the factory stock which fit my cheek weld a little better.

Video of target and shot.

Video walking up to target, impact, and target size measurement.

Here was the setup and position. Target is above the road on the far side at the top of the opening below the dark green trees.
IMG_6326[1].JPG

Day 2 shooting at 10 am, been getting rain which stopped on my drive but was still stormy and some variable wind. Same locaiton 590 yards.

I had a heck of a time deciding which way the wind was going. No wind at my location and nothing at the target when I hung it, but that knowledge would have been cheating anyway.

Video at the target. I took 3 more shots prior to going to the target since the challenge was complete with shot number 2.

Really good day for learning and challenging myself to gauge conditions. All 4 shots I took today were well executed and I was able to spot my own impact in the scope, stayed on target and pinned the trigger back through the shot until I released well after the shot.

Wind update after the video at the target I measured with my Kestrel at the target. Wind was variable from 3-7 mph left to right but would gust to 10 plus and that wasn't the strongest I felt but was the strongest I measured. Oddly right after the 10 mph gust it dropped to almost nothing (1-2), then actually reversed and was right to left at 2-2.5 mph before resuming the average 3-7 left to right. Tough conditions to gauge but my assessment of 5 mph or a little more pre shot #2 was good enough had I accounted for the correct direction.
Shot #2 impacted 10 ish inches to the right of the right edge of gong. In my ballistic app I entered 7 MPH left to right and got 9.2", then I entered 8 MPH and got 10.8" so my assessment is that the wind was somewhere right about there.
Shot #3 was directly inline with my hold in the L-R direction. Wind must have been less, and watching that video I would agree as well based on almost no vegetation movement. Was hard to trust no movement after I had just watched shot #2 go so far right.
Shot #4 was a hit to the left of my aim by a few inches. not much for visible wind based on vegetation.
Shot #5 was just off right edge but I held center. Right after the shot you can see a large uptick in vegetation movement. My assessment is the bullet encountered the wind in the middle of the canyon prior to the wind being visible at the target on the far ridge.

Overall great shooting and learning day. Wind and judging the wind continues to be my biggest challenge. Shot #2 I would have waited longer had that been an animal until I was more certain of direction and speed. It's the challenge so I made my best assessment and proceeded to shoot.

Thanks again for the Challenge Rokslide!, and all the sponsors. I continue to learn and improve even if that isn't showing with impacts this year. I am a much better shooter and a good part of that is driven by the learning from this challenge.

2026 the goal is 760 yards, seated with tripod front support and pack rear support. I found the shooting location with the same target location as this year!

2025 Rokslide Day 1&2 Target - Clean.jpg

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Day 1 / 589 Yards (Qualifier)
Hot with a light breeze today, enough to catch the trace in video. Shot broke as wind was fading and the round impacted exactly at POA. Elevation was perfect, wind hold put it just inside the left edge.

Conditions: Temp 91* / Elevation 292’ / Winds 4-8mph from 7 o’clock
Dial U11.25 / Hold L1.0
Setup: Prone, UM Molinator rear bag, bipod

Day 2 / 601 Yards (Qualifier)
Hot and humid again this morning with a light breeze from the other direction that offset any wind hold, POA was just off center to the left. Elevation was a hair low, 3” off the bottom edge but I didn’t dial up with the minimal increase in distance from yesterday (~12 yards). Good trace in the video again today!

Conditions: Temp 89* / Elevation 292’ / Winds 2-5mph from 5 o’clock
Dial U11.25 / Hold L0.0
Setup: Prone, UM Molinator rear bag, bipod

Day 3 / 738 Yards
Forgot to drop my target on the ground after day 2, someone took a few shots on it so I gave it a fresh paint job this morning. Consistent wind from the 3 o'clock at 4mph with gusts up to 11mph which amplified my level of not being great at calling wind. I sat and let the Kestrel run for about 10 minutes, watching the wind values and trying to get a feel for what the different speeds felt like on my face/hands/body. I turned off the Kestrel and sat for about another 5 minutes and then made the wind call on the fly. Elevation was spot on but my wind call was off by about .75MOA, probably underestimated wind by 2-3mph but managed to get it inside the edge! Held for a 5mph wind, probably needed to hold for 7 or 8.

Conditions: Temp 81* / Elevation 292’ / Winds 4-11mph from 2-3 o’clock
Dial U16.25 / Hold L2.0
Setup: Prone, UM Molinator rear bag, bipod

Day 4 / 738 Yards
Final day, got out early and setup at the same location. Winds were consistent from the 5 o'clock with small gusts this morning. Did the same thing as yesterday, ran the Kestrel for a few minutes to get a feel, then sat back for 5 or 6 minutes to call wind value on my own. Dialed 16.0MOA elevation, held just over 1MOA to offset a 6mph wind, and ended up being about a .25-.5MOA low on impact. Shot broke clean and it felt like the wind hold was correct today.

Conditions: Temp 74* / Elevation 292’ / Winds 5-9mph from 5 o’clock
Dial U16.0 / Hold R1.25
Setup: Prone, UM Molinator rear bag, bipod

Day 1–581 yards

102 Degrees with a 10-14 mph 7:00 Wind. Impact about an inch low and left of center.

Finally getting around to posting my last 3 shots!

Day 2-602 Yards

About the same conditions as Day 1. Impact about an inch below my last shot.

Day 3-865 Yards

The West Texas wind showed up! Blowing 22-27 mph with 35 mph gusts. Thought about lowering my MER, but decided to shoot anyway, and made it happen. Impact on the right side of the circle. Sorry, the video is awful due to the wind.

Day 4-855 Yards

Still windy! 20-25 mph. Barely squeaked this one in the circle, but it’s still in the yellow. Was low and left.

I think this is my third year shooting the CBC and my first to hit all four shots. Not to mention the worst conditions and my furthest MER. Cool to look back at improvement from year to year. Here are the final results.
