That’s why I said NR. Most of us are willing to spend 2k (or more) on a good elk tag because we don’t have the luxury of good elk hunting in our home state. That’s the price of business, and if you look at landowner tags in NM, that cost could be a lot higher based on demand

Application services were pushing clients hard to dump points so send a few cards their way.
Yep...Four people applied with double-digit points in the special for general. Seventeen applied in the regular. Glad I drew last year..I will probably be a resident before I get enough pp to draw a gen again as NR.

I don’t need antlers to hunt elk as a NonRes. Especially at $2000

Drew General with 2 points in Regular Draw as a NR. First Elk hunt. My life is about to get insane trying to prepare. Still don't know how I managed to draw with so few points, but I'll take it.

Your points didn’t factor in. You were lucky and drew from the random pool.

IMO $2000 for an elk tag is too much.
I can spend my money elsewhere and wiser.

I’m trying to party apply with a buddy. 5 + 3 = 4 average. The past two years we’ve been on the bubble with no luck.

I see three options for us next year. 1) split our apps & I hunt 2024 and wait for his tag in a few years. 2) we stay partied & keep praying in regular draw 3) we hold on applying for another yr or two and shift focus to other states.

Jumping into the special is just a bit too rich for us.

Personally I'd hunt one shooter one year and try to hunt the other the next year. Some buddies don't work that way but for me I have just as much fun whether I'm the shooter or not. I've quartered friend's animals and told them to go hunt another and meet me back at the truck before.
Bad news for western hunting: you are probably in the minority of NR applicants if $2000 is your cutoff.
Personally $2k is about $1k more than I can afford right now, just physically can't swing it.

You guys that drew a general tag, you need to treat it like a 10+ preference point hunt. Commit and spend as much time as you can because you probably won't draw it again for a very long time.

There are over 100,000 hunters with either 1, 2, or 3 preference points going into the draw this year. Add another 50k that will buy this year and it gets a bit ridiculous. The vast majority of them are hoping for the general tag. It's going to take a long time to work through those numbers... Maybe 20+ years if tag numbers stay the same and everyone stays the course.

Man, I’m glad you posted this. I was considering buying points for the first time there but it’s hard not to feel like the train left the station.

Correct. I didn't phrase that right. I got lucky in the random pool; just surprised that I managed to get so lucky vs. having to go through multiple years of unsuccessful draws/point buying. In my case, I only bought points for two years, then got in the draw for the first time this year. So someone else pointed out that I should take this like a winning lottery ticket, esp. given so little skin/time in the game; my thoughts exactly.
