Lightweight Trail Shoes vs. Frankenstein Boots

Professionals aren't immune to groupthink, and small, insular groups can be more vulnerable to it. Ever seen wildland firefighters still sporting high-heel boots? They are quite attached to them despite there being numerous better options they are slow to adopt. Also I've noticed a lot of...

    Sawyer Gravity Filter

I just got back from a 2-night backpacking trip in western colorado. Recent rains had the creeks high and silty, Sawyer mini absolutely would not work in a gravity mode. Sawyer Squeeze would have worked but been slow. Filling a 2L platy bottle and sqeezing/rolling was very fast. Unless I had to...

    Fabric ID?

Looks like the marpat/coyote two-tone they used for the USMC field tarp. I think it is 1.9oz nylon with a heavy coyote PU coating. Should be plenty waterproof, obviously not super sturdy but it should hold up fine for most things; stuff sacks, pull outs, tarps, ponchos, etc.

    Alternative pouches for hipbelts

PALS webbing. One of the best PALs attachments on the market as well, a laser cut hypalon matrix with velcro tabs. Light, tough and rides very close. Less failure prone then the typical snap arrangement. I drive a cheap car so I can have nice things.

    First Lite Grizzly Glove?

I've used them a bit, really impressed. the wool fleece liner is pretty unique and works very well. The cuff it a little short compared to a lot of deep winter mitts (OR firebrand is kinda my reference point) but this makes them much easier to get on and off and less fussy. the idiot cords are...

    Alternative pouches for hipbelts

I use Blue Force Gear pouches, light and well made. I find them on eBay as the retail price is steep. https://www.blueforcegear.com/small-utilty-pouch.html

    First Lite's New 2016 Gear!

Grizzly gloves kick ass. I was surprised that I could even tie decent knots in tent guy lines with them on. Fingers are a bit big for most trigger guards though, so they aren't really shooting mitts. Held up pretty well to wood prep too, I might get a second pair!

Sea to Summit Thermalite Bag Liner?

I think bag liners are almost always a bad idea. I found them a fussy, tangled mess that makes it that much harder to enter and exit the bag (I'm really groggy when I first wake up, especially in the middle of the night). Yes they add warmth but the weight/warmth ratio is pretty bad, as an REI...

    Pack Waterproofing

blame marketing for that, we keep getting told that waterproof is a yes/no question when it is nearly always a how much/for how long question. If the spray helps with repellency and doesn't hurt the fabric (don't see how it would) it might be worth hitting a pack every time you go out, even if...

    New pack from HPG

for the capacity it isn't bad, not really weight competitive but still respectable (there are lots of 8+ lbs packs in that size range, and a lot of much smaller packs that weigh the same) but from what I've heard of the design I expect the external frame to be in the 4-lb range like a lot of...

    Pack Waterproofing

Even if you seal the seams separately you aren't going to have a waterproof pack, it will just shed a lot more water before it gets through.

from the thread at the HPG forum it sounds like they are still on track for the external.

I'm jealous, they flat out told me they wouldn't divulge that, glad they changed their mind at least.

    New mystery ranch packs

Running their own factory is probably more expensive then just contracting out to any ol' "Asian Sweatshop," that and the retail markup is going to keep the price up (really Shrek, there are plenty of intelligent arguments you could make against MR without petty ad hominem name calling). There...

kifaru slick bag old vs new temp rating

old 20* slick bag had 6oz of climasheild combat, a 30* bag my most standards. new 20* I think has 6oz of Climasheild Apex, but I couldn't get anyone at Kifaru to verify this. My old 20* slick bag was aged enough to be closer to a 40* bag, synthetic will degrade over time so I usually aim pretty...

    Pack Mule Frames ???

I've tried them on, no point in having a frame with no shoulder lift. you can carry 200# on a leather tump line, doesn't mean you'll want too. The seat is a gimmick in my book, just get a crazy creek chair and a decent pack instead. Honestly just about anything would be better, including surplus...

    Big Man Pack

If big equals tall or long torso (or even normal torso) eberlestock pack is going to be short. Any of the big pack names should have plenty of adjustment for most mortals; Kifaru/MR/SG/SO etc.
