How many guys are using the sawyer water filter and have it rigged up for gravity feed? How do they like this setup? Currently running a MSR mini works pump. Its heavy, and i get tired of pumping pretty quick on a trip. What kind of stuff does a guy need to get this setup rigged up?

I just got back from a 2-night backpacking trip in western colorado. Recent rains had the creeks high and silty, Sawyer mini absolutely would not work in a gravity mode. Sawyer Squeeze would have worked but been slow. Filling a 2L platy bottle and sqeezing/rolling was very fast.
Unless I had to filter more then 4L at a time I would guess I could filter the water faster then I could rig up a gravity setup.

Ive had that issue before. in that situation I do a pre filter. Someone posted last year about a filter that they used to pre filter silty water. It has worked great. I keep it in my kit just incase I run into that issue. Will see if I can find the link for you Fowler.

I put this over my Big zip opening when I dip it and let the water rush through it to make sure I don't have any fine stuff in it. Hope this helps. I've had it clog up a few times and had to rinse it out but otherwise it works great and weighs next to nothing. this is fairly large. Mine came with a metal ring for the opening I just removed that.

I would be interested in a small pre filter I can hook up and clean out. I run a sawyer squeeze and use it in a gravity set up as well as squeeze it.

The squeeze worked so well I don't see the need for a prefilter, the mini worked so poorly I don't see the point of using it even with a prefilter. I've read several people that seem to think the mini was a poor gravity filter, even ones that had decent luck using it other ways.

My main point is that I would rather spend 2 minutes squeezing then 2 minutes setting up a gravity system, 5 minutes waiting for it to do its thang and then picking it all back up. There are certainly times I can see the point, but I don't think I would ever have a gravity setup as my primary means.

i have both, and i need both. i love knowing im going into one of areas that i can use my Sawyer gravity feed.other spots i go to i need my pump to get water out of seeps,or the proverbial hoof print.
scouting new ground,i take the pump. if i find good water that is big enough i will take the Sawyer next time in.
of course there are always iodine tabs in the survival kit no matter where i am

I use the same setup with excellent results. Last year where we camped, the stream was narrow and quite a bit lower than the banks so rather than laying down in the wet grass I used the filter as a bucket and let the water pour into the bladder. I was able to fill a 3l Platypus with about three scoops.

Bumping this back up... want to get a Prefilter for a 32 ounce nalgene bottle and also use the same prefilter on a 6 liter Dromlite bag to get most of the sediment out before I gravity filter with a sawyer mini. Not sure how I would use the Biodiesel filters for these two applications?? I also looked at the Steripen Fits All and Steripen Water Bottle prefilter but Im not sold on those either. Anyone have any advise?

i used one inline with my MSR bladder this year, and then at camp i could hang it and use it as a gravity. it makes it a little harder to drink through the bladder and clogged up enough that i noticed it not working very well. so i wont be doing inline again this year, but i think i will bring the sawyer because its lightweight and use it at camp. after hearing the sawyer style filters are rendered useless if they ever freeze it kind of steered me away from them. during archery season its not much concern typically of course, but still.
