What is your goto in the field and shop. My fur skinning knifes i use ceramic 9" sticks in a block to make a V. They never get real bad but my pack knife is a buck light and I can not get it sharp like my skinners.

I have about a 4” piece of an old belt with some stropping compound on it in my pack. That usually gets me by until I get back to the truck.

In the shop I have a pile of different stones and strops.
My go 2 is a sharpal 325/1200 grit diamond stone with a 6 micron stropping compound on a strop.

I haven’t found a sharpening system that I can actually sharpen a knife on. Always seems more dull that when I started. So I just used one those pull thru sharpeners. And it bugs the crap out of me because I can get a chainsaw chain scary sharp. So if anyone has a sharpening system for dummies let me know.

I’ve sucked at sharpening knives but lately I’ve figured out the worksharp field sharpener and I can get my knives sharp enough to shave with. I keep it in my pack. I’m sure there’s better but it’s pretty intuitive for someone without a lot of skills.

The burr is the key to sharp. A consistent angle until you get a burr, flip and work the other side to a burr. You're sharp now. Break the burr and refine the edge.

Worksharp belt sharpener but be careful to stop the belt at the tip or you will round of your blade tip. Lanksky works great as well. In the field I use the work sharp field sharpener

I can't believe I didn't buy the Worksharp system years ago. Holy sharp blades, Batman!

For the field, these weigh 2oz

For home and for my custom knives, I sharpen on a 1x42 belt sander. As has been said, raising a burr, refining the burr, polishing off the burr are the key steps to a truly sharp knife. A belt sander just lets you do that while making a convex apple seed shaped edge that is stronger and doesn’t tend to roll or chip.

Good video by the guys at EXO on sharpening knives in the field. They use a DMT diafold. I bought one and it’s slick. I also have larger DMT diamond stones for home use. That’s what the Dozier folks recommended to sharpen their D2 blades. I wish I would have practiced more on my crappy knives before trying on my Dozier ;(

This is me too except my strop is treated with 0.5 micron diamond compound. Shaving sharp every time.

In the field I carry a small strop about 1 1/2" x 6", leather on 3/16" plywood, again treated with 0.5 micron diamond. It works fine for a quick touch up and weighs almost nothing.

Ken onion work sharp and then a strop on a double sided leather strop, They get hair popping sharp.

I can sharpen on wet stones too but the ken onion is way easier.
