I'm in a c-level/consultant-in-residence position for a software company in the AEC market place.
We just lost my head that managed our new division with me, while he still managed the building divisions programming and support. He got a stellar offer from a startup, and he's wife has a great job, so lots of flexibility to entertain big offers at his stage and his knowledge.
I'm running programming and support (think more beta testers and program support, not "how do I do this") until the new guy starts Monday. 4 weeks of it.
I've tried my damndest. Took phone calls immediately, walked through products I've never opened, had betas tell me in depth some about structural engineering and why x function should be before z blahblahblah. Run down to our head structural engineer and programmer. Talk why we don't, talk cost, talk how many users need it, how long...this dude on the line is in the middle of a NY tunnel deal...go back to my office and call the dude tell him exactly what's up, and try to get as much time from him, and push my guys without burning em out, cause I still have my normal load, so what can I help each with.
Some guys/gals have been straight great, others have been straight dicks that I've told to calm down, we're stretched, you're stretched, your an owner, I'm an owner answering programming shit, logging onto computers to change registries and alter FTSets, whatever they are, to see if that resolves some weird quark when you select x feature and it locks up when you analyze some $2 word I also don't know what that is.
Some things work and I'm a hero to them, some dont and I practically kicked your dog and ran him over, now I'm dating your daughter.
I can not wait to hand the new guy his office keys and first paycheck.
