The vast majority of this new pre-sale bs is to fund production, limit liability, and save on interest. If the customer is on the hook from the get, you have zero exposure if it goes sideways.
That's all they're doing is cash-poor companies trying to avoid taking out loans to fund their own business.
There are plenty of times where consumers may want a product and businesses for whatever reason cant or wont take on the risk and capital investment. This facilitates a way for consumers to help bring the product they want to market. Participation is totally optional and not a scam in any way. I dont participate in many though do in some.
I actually do this all the time in B2B sales. I have a partner I want to build me something, they cant or wont take on the risk or investment, I dont want to build it myself for whatever reason, I may fund the investment of their build. Generally this is in exchange for other favorable terms though not always, sometimes its just to get what I wanted to buy.
In this case thats not even the deal, they are not offering a pre-sale given the hassles from the rokstock. Its their customers asking for one.
