Will there ever be primers again?

Every time the white house has turned blue in the 30'ish years I've been handloading... this has happened.

It will right itself. All it takes is a red white house and shelves will be overflowing with components. Then all the people that are complaining about bare shelves now, will complain about prices and not buy any... and then when the shelves go bare they will complain about not having any again.

... just like the last 2 times this happened.
panic buying when blue controls has happened but it doesn’t explain 2020 until now…
I did enjoy the ammo rebates reloading rebates during the last presidents term. Bought a neighbor federal power shok 30-30 150 grain ammo and after buying at Walmart sale price and then the rebate I paid just under $40 for 10 boxes 😂

Not sure if it's been mentioned but I see lrp on discord pretty regularly. I even saw a notification for RL26 the other day. I tried ammoseek and never could get it to work reliably. Discord has been a lot better.

This cycle was predictable, this level is unprecedented.

You're point on. Obama did the same thing. He even had the military grind up spent brass. I couldn't get 22 mag for 2 years. When it came back I bought enough to wear out my barrel. On 22 mag I don't GAF now.

They caught me on small pistol primers. When they come down I'm gonna balance all my stock primer/powder/bullet for each caliber. Then I'll not GAF evermore.

Only problem is it is not a fact.
It did not take me long to do a search and truth about guns has a story on it.

Yes, it is. So is the numbers of new shooters and numbers of firearms being purchased. Have you seen the data lately? Since january 2020, there have been over 1 million firearms purchased per month. The big months are somewhere between 2.2 and 3 million firearms purchased in a single month. That's roughly the equivalent of a firearm being purchased every second to two seconds... for two years straight.

Pretty wild to think about the scale of that.

This isn't to say people are shooting more, because I know for a fact they are not. However, I keep seeing pictures of tens of thousands of primers sitting on the shelves of guys that don't shoot more than a couple hundred rounds a year.

Not long ago, customers ran this entire country out of AR15's... the most plentiful rifle in existence... and for a while there were none to buy anywhere. I knew guys that were buying 100 at a time, just to stack in their garage.

Now look at primers. Before all this, they were less than $50 per thousand. Think of just how many someone with enough money to buy a few AR15's can buy and hoard? Then the scalpers buy all that remains, to the last one. Manufacturers are not accustomed to being able to sell all they produce, as primers were commonplace everywhere for virtually ever. No one was out of stock, ever... not since obama, and that shortage was short in comparison.

The primer manufacturers saw what happened to the AR15 manufacturers when they put tons of money into increasing production during a panic, and how many of them folded during the subsequent collapse. So, rather than increase production costs... they will instead increase price until demand is reduced. This will maximize their profits and minimize their risk.

I found many articles saying the Obama Administration was involved in requiring mil spent brass be mutilated. Most were from shooting enthusiast sites though. I was not able to find a definitive answer what happened from a reputable unbiased site.

If you did find that, a link would be handy. At this point I can say there was a lot of discussion about it in 2009. And you say it's not true.

Honestly there is an ocean of garbage info. If indeed I was wrong it was not purposeful.

In like manner I hope Biden is not trying to eliminate lake city from selling ammunition above and beyond military orders. But if it dries up we'll all know it.

I'm seeing some available but near $200 once you factor in shipping and hazmat. Is anyone finding them reasonably priced or at least free hazmat or something? I used to look on discord but gave it up. This thread convinced me to at least put the app back on the phone

Discord is hit and miss. I’m usually only trying in store pick up at Cabellas and such. I’ll occasionally find some at a good enough deal to buy in bulk and it not be outrageous. But let’s me honest, how fast are we shooting through 1000 LRMs? I can’t imagine how much money that is on top in projectiles, brass, powder, and my time.

If I’m going to sneeze at $150 shipped vs $110 shipped, I’m in the wrong hobby.

Good article. I do remember several congressmen got involved to speed up the release of spent brass from DOD. Thanks.

I shoot some pistol matches and reload. Small pistol primers have broken $100 shipped for the last couple months. I just got 5000 federals for $486 shipped With hazmat. Availability is still not 100% but they are obtainable. Powder is still pricey and bullets are pretty reasonable IMO.

Discord was solid for a while when I used it. Still have to be quick to buy.

Got 1K CCI 200 and 250 at a local gun shop, so unicorns do exist. Was $99 ea, which is steep, But not having to pay shipping or hazmat, and the fact that I’ve got them now, and likely don’t have to worry for a couple of years, based on my shooting numbers, it was worth paying double. Thanks for all the insight from the folks on the thread.

Once the supplies are purchased and in your stockpile, the cost is inconsequential. However if you are a chronic shooter its a differant situation.

I reload for accuracy per gun and maintain a stockpile that I can replenish every 2-3 years. It would be a depressing day if I had to return to factory ammo. Especially at todays prices. Knowing that every shell I have will shoot the same as the next is critical. Many years I am only going to get one shot so it better be as good as I can get cause there isn't much room for expermintation.
