What knives or other tools do you use on moose in the field?

I do it the same way BRWNBR described. Usually I can roll them over myself after doing one side, this year was a first because of the way he was stuck in a hole and I couldn't roll him up hill. I did one half then had to gut the sucker so I could get him re-situated. It reminded me why I don't like to gut em.

I have a Kestrel knife set; Caper, Skinner, and their EDC blade. I have that along with my Wyoming saw for a big animal like Moose or Bear. This set-up has been working well for me for far. The Kestrel blades hold an edge very well too. I carry Paracord for tying the legs to a tree if available for leverage while skinning/quartering.

The ribs don't need to be sawed off. They have joints on both ends. Once you find them you can remove them pretty quick and don't have sharp edges

Resurrecting an old thread but I'd like to hear more about removing the ribs with a knife. Can you describe it or point me to a video?

Sounds much more elegant than sawing through all the bones.

How about working through the vertebrae at the neck, can you do that without a saw?

I did a bunch of moose with replaceable blade Outdoor Edge knives but my Bark River Gunny Hunter convex is simply amazing and my 6 in boning Victorinox is also outstanding for boning & skinning. That tip was from Billy Molls.
These small meat hooks are handy too.

If i am at a place the ribs have to come out i have used a wyoming saw although i honestly think a small stanley carpentry saw maybe better.

We used a battery operated sawsall on the ribs and legs last weekend and I’m sold. Don’t think I’ll be moose hunting without one again.

Yeah a Milwaukee saw with a charged up battery is tough to beat.
