What is your backup plan if you don't draw?

I put in again for NM elk and CO muley archery. If I don't draw , I plan to do a few days of whining and then find OTC somewhere for elk.

I'm in the same boat as several others who already commented. My planning revolves around my OTC hunts, the draws are the back-up plan.

For the Plan B OTC guys, do you use somewhere you have already hunted OTC as your backup, or do you scout new areas?

Last year we used CO OTC archery elk as a backup. We didn't draw WY elk and decided to hunt an OTC elk unit we had previously hunted in CO. We scouted a spot we had been before and hung trail cameras on wallows. We then took a day to go to the opposite end of the unit to scout a new spot. We ended up hunting both locations so I am glad we made a scouting trip to a new place prior to season.

My every year plan is to hunt OTC. My backup plan is IF I do draw something.

I agree as well! A couple weeks ago my hunting plans for 2015 were shot to heck as my wife and I each drew 2 tags a piece all for tags in differentials at different times!! Well there goes what I had planned and will be hunting mostly OTC still with a few draw hunts sprinkled in ;)

I'd say a mix of both. I know it's best to spend more time getting to know an area, but I like exploring new country. Especially now the the pine beetle issue changing hunting here in CO I'm going to be spending more weekends exploring a few different places when the snow melts.

Points in Wyoming and Az, if I dont draw Utah or Co (2nd choice) I will hunt OTC in Co, Ne for muleys and antelope as well as Ne and Ks whitetails.

Pts only AZ/UT. Didn't draw WY (shocker). CO and NM apps go in tomorrow. After that it's CO OTC, MT leftover. All elk, deer will depend on how elk hunts go.

I'm just like Brock, although I also just live up the road from him and we are both lucky enough that within thirty minutes of each of us we can be out the door with our bows and off hunting. (Depending on where I'm hunting, sometimes it's only 10 minutes). I follow the "Reach for the stars and land on the moon" method of planning for my yearly hunts. This year I'll be doing spring turkey in Eastern, WA, Archery elk in Western, WA, muzzleloader mule deer in Eastern, WA, taking my daughter out for modern rifle for deer and elk, and sporadically hunting for bear during the general season.

More than likely, I'll be hunting in Montana for deer and elk with my buddy as long as we draw. Then there is a less than even chance of drawing spring bear with my points this year. There is a snow balls chance in Hell that I'll be hunting sheep, moose, or goat depending on our once in a lifetime special draw in this state, however it is still a chance and I'm feeling lucky! Someone has to win. If the moons are fully in alignment and I win the Desert Sheep hunt at the Wild Sheep Foundation banquet this weekend I'll be in Texas at some point. I'm preparing my acceptance speech now. I'm trying to stay positive for all of this since I have a bunch of vacation saved up! :)

Sorry Wonky, but Corey has already said he's drawing my name for the desert hunt..sorry...

I will be just as busy each year regardless of if I or anyone I know draws. Only thing drawing does is determine when and where I'll be rather than the OTC hunts I have planned.
