So I’m in the home stretch of getting my 6.5 Sherman short done and now I need a stock what are your favorite stocks for 400 and under. I know there is a lot of love for manners and McMillan they just aren’t in the cards right now.

700 action, bartlein number 13 barrel 26 in 1-8 twist, factory trigger job, vortex viper pst 6x24x50

Save another $200 and get the McM or Manners you want.

OR-- keep checking both of their websites for INSTOCK inventory- you will find occasional deals-- If a couple ounces is not a big deal then look for a 'non-elite' ie STANDARD fill Manners in the style you want... probably run you about $540ish. Well worth the extra $140 to have the right stock that would fit.

I've also been seeing using manners and mcms going sub $500 but you'll need to do the work to clean out old bedding.

Yeah, go paint some old ladies living room and get a McMillan. No damn sense in half assing it now. You could shoot it in a factory handle in the meantime. Spray paint it for shits and giggles.

About the only other option might be Grayboe, but I’d still save my pennies for the McMillan.

Sell some crap.

I watched the classifieds here and 24h campfire and picked up a greyboe take-off for $300 a year ago.

I agree that McMillan and manners are widely accepted as “the best”. What is it specifically that makes them better than something like a Bell and Carlson, magpul Hunter or hs precision? Not trying to argue but seriously wanting to know as I’m in the market for a new stock on one of my rifles and would like to compare all the options

I have a couple of H.S. Precision stocks and a couple of Bell & Carlson stocks on Remington 700s. Two came with the rifles from the factory. They work, but I find them slick when it is wet out - especially the H.S. Precision. I would like to have some texture or checkering on the grip and foreend.

If you decide you can up your budget some, I would second what duckhunter175 said about checking out the McMillan store. If you aren’t in a big hurry, get on their mailing list as they occasionally have 20% off in-stock stocks. They almost always have something in-stock for a short action Remington 700 with a Remington Varmint Countour (I think think the Bartlein 13 is supposed to duplicate that contour).

McMillans are just built better. Never messed with manners. Ergos are right and you can easily have them spec it exactly how you want, down to the exact barrel contour. Then of course there’s the finish options. No matter what bottom metal you’re using, they’ll make it right. Their inlets are spot on.

BC is a glorified 2X4. The last one I had looked like it had termites and the best they can do is “paint”.

Seriously spend some time researching it. Or pick up the phone and call. They know their shit.

Never heard anyone regret buying one.

Get a Bell & Carlson. I bought into the hype and bought a McMillan edge filled stock once and won't waste my money on that again.

It didn't offer anything that the B&C stock didn't for about half the price. You can over pay if you want to, but I prefer not to.

You mean besides the 8ish ounces, extremely limited inlets and bedding blocks that generally need milled out and bedded because they don’t get much contact?

All of my B&C stocks have been drop in ready with no work needed, which is more than I can say for the McMillan. There wasn't but a couple ounces difference between the two in my application.

The McMillan was definitely not worth the extra price.

Said no one ever.....

Sorry, I tried all the high end ones as well. I’m firmly in the HS and BC camp. The ergos on most of those just don’t feel natural.

I also don’t like the interior of Tacoma, doesn’t mean they aren’t excellent, just doesn’t feel good to me.

Lol. It offers so much more than your B&C stock does. You don’t know what you don’t know.
