What is the best sub $400.00 Rifle stock.

Well, I'm a Rem 700 fanatic and I have 5 that were customized. All 5 wear HS Precision stocks. I am extremely satisfied with my HS stocks. Perhaps they are considered expensive but considering what it takes to have a rifle customized I don't think the price is a problem.

I’ve got several HS stocks, I’ve had a couple of B&Cs. IMO the fit and finish on the HS is much better. The B&Cs took a little work to fit right, but they’re cheaper. Either is a fine choice for a hunting rifle unless you’re trying to go super light.
I’ve got a McMillan A5 on my match rifle. It’s a much better built stock, but it damn well better be for the cost. The McMillans aren’t really meant to be plug and play stocks though. Kind of an apples to oranges comparison IMO.

I put a 700 action in a Grayboe stock, $289, bedded it and free floated my shilen barrel and was a tack driver before i sold it.

Any disgruntled McMillan owners want to trade those rubbish a5, or sako classsic let me know.. I’ll have a brand new B&c to your door by mid week. Same with tikka/700 inlet and eh1 or t4

Far be it for me to get involved in these pissin' matches; but, aren't we all getting a little absurd? I don't think anybody in this thread who stated they preferred a B&C/HS for whatever reason stated they would pay the same for one of them as they would a McMillan or Manners. As always I am willing to stand corrected.

I've owned Manners, McMillan, B&C , Grayboe, CA and HS and still do own at least one of each of those. I like them all. Of course, I'm one of those huckleberries who has never had a Remington 700 bolt handle fall off and I've been able to get every Kimber Montana I've owned to shoot MOA. That doesn't mean other people have not had opposite experiences.

OP, you've received good input and some crap. The fact of the matter is there are people who have had experiences with the exact same thing with different, even opposite, results. Some of the best advice received so far is to post a WTB aftermarket stock ad and see what offers you get. Heck, one of the most oft cited reasons for not liking a B&C stock is the palm swell. That happens to be my preferred feature of them. And I don't have giant mits. Any of those mentioned may or may not work for you. One of the best things about this hobby of hours (and, worse at the same time) is trying different things. For most stocks mentioned here, if you buy right and don't like it, you should be able to sell at little or no loss.

Good luck in your quest.

Man there is a lot of dick swinging going on in this thread...

Anyway, I'd look at the Wildcat composite as well. I don't have one, but they got a good review here. I have been comparing specs with other light weight stocks like Manners, etc. And they seem to be the best bang for your buck if you are looking for something light and fiberglass and like DIY projects.
