In my hometown we had out first confirmed case of corona-virus. Town of 12,000 people. I will be curious to see how our schools react, (I am a teacher). A school that is 2 hours away closed their doors because a parent of a student is confirmed to have corona-virus. Personally I wouldn't mind if our schools shut down for a few days to clean the whole buildings. The snow goose migration is in full force and I could get a few extra days in the field rather than the classroom.

Like I said why don't you focus on pneumonia and the common flu that kill way more of the elderly in the U.S. alone than the Corona virus has killed worldwide
I personally do!! I'm asthmatic and in late 50s. I'm at risk. My family and I get flu shots and my wife and I pneumonia. And we wash our hands etc. The flu and pneumonia shots don't cover all flu and pneumonia. I don't like to go to pot lucks and the like during flu season. If you wash your hands, stay 3 feet from people it helps a lot. An ER doctor told me. Bill

These people should of course get flu and pneumonia shots regularly. People who visit and care for them should be extremely careful washing their hands, covering their mouths when coughing, etc. They should avoid large gatherings, etc.

Yes, UVA is recommending pneumonia shots for everyone over 65 or with compromised systems, or who smoke

Last time I checked being fat isn’t contagious, although in this country one could make a decent case
What about people getting cancer from second hand smoke... I live in a backwards town in central IN and we had citizens and bar owners come unglued when we (I work for the city) tried to pass a ordinance banning smoking in bars... their main argument was if you didn't like smoke stay home... not trying to argue just believe we have much bigger issues facing our country currently than a virus that has killed less people than smoking has between these two comments.

That’s the equivalent of saying why worry about HIV, AIDS is worse. Uhhh, well yeah but One causes the other. The 18% I brought up are the ones progressing to severe respiratory problems like pneumonia.

Apples to oranges. One has known treatments, known vaccines, some immunity. One doesn’t, so it has no correlation. Will it spread as far to as many people? No idea.

It might end up fizzling, but I don’t think it’s a bad idea to 1- feel for the people locked in their houses with who knows what income, 2- feel for the families burying people they weren’t allowed to visit in their last days, 3-take steps to not acquire/spread it to others, 4-prepare just Incase you are quarantined. If you can’t leave your house by possible order of law, might not be a bad idea to have a plan. There’s no panic when you have a plan in place, no need for it.

Hell there are people talking about suing the father daughter that went to the dance and exposed people. You get told to stay home, sounds like you better stay home. You show me a flu/pneumonia/cold that someone’s been sued for spreading?

A guy can be concerned without panicking. I think its crazy to go buy a bunch of tp but its also crazy to completely dismiss it. Its a new virus with very little confirmed knowledge of it, it should be approached with caution. If it can be mitigated, it should be right? That said, the fear mongering in the news and social media does no good for anyone, some of it is so clearly for "clicks" it should be criminal.

Do you know how you come off in this paragraph?

You're probably really popular with the people you work for. For the record, they were right.

Cannon fodder LOL!!! We do worry about them and accept the terrible reality that they are vulnerable. These 18% suffer much more year in and year out with the flu. Why should everyone all of a sudden freak out for these 18% for the Wuhan virus than the yearly flu, which is probably worse so far? Why do some feel that stating facts is cruel? Probably, because these folks are super concerned and caring, which isn't bad, it's good. However, I hope logic prevails over emotion. Bill

Obviously I’m being sarcastic but there’s no flu that killed that high percentage since 1918. There’s no freak out I’ve seen, although I might look like Jack Nicholson if locked in the house for a month, crazy eyes and all.

If it spreads as easier than the flu, will it infect as many? I’d think so. If so the toll will be much higher, so I don’t think it’s fair to even compare it to others when it’s an unknown. In 1-2 years it will be just another flu, but for the time being it’s going to be ugly, both economy and health wise

I can easily avoid secondhand smoke. I can’t even tell you the last time I’ve smelled cigarette smoke. The death toll from this virus is just getting started, I’m not some doom and gloom type or anything but it’s silly to compare current death totals to anything else.

I keep hearing we are xx days “behind” China. I disagree with this because we have been learning and changing habits exponentially since the onset of the virus. If we were truly xx days behinD, we’d have to toss out everything we know. This is fearmongering. Everyone of us has changed our lives because of this. That wasn’t happening 50 days ago. We are ahead of China, not behind.

I haven’t been keeping up with this thread so I apologize... Anyways, for those of you that have started your prepping by filling your basement full of bottled water, toilet paper and hand sanitizers. I advise that you also buy out all the .22 LR ammo at the local hardware store. Once this blows over in a few weeks you may have to take shelter from all your angry incredibly parched, dirty faced, s*** stained hands neighbors who will be quite upset with you. Careful now, that Irish spring fragrance is going to give you away...

Here in the north, our flu season typically trends down with warmer weather when people tend to spend more time outdoors as winter dies down. I expect the same with coronavirus. They are quarantining to protect the masses for as long as possible and until the weather gets better. If they can prolong and prevent a massive spike, it won’t flood our healthcare systems with new cases as we buy time towards summer.

That's the important part.

Breaking your arm isn't a big deal at all but if 10 million people all break their arms at the same time it's going to be a bigly yuge problem for the health care system. Add in about a 3% chance to die to all that and you have a legitimate clusterfuck

I would never parronize a place like that. Screw 'em. I'd go elsewhere or not go at all.

This did come off a little dense... I was not actually involved the ordinance was at the county level but the city supported it. Just a sore subject because the county elected officials listened to the loud minority who were opposed to the ordinance rather than the silent majority. Screaming and yelling at commissioners meeting gets votes apparently. Our county is one of the least healthy in the state but we city or county catch hell anytime we try to improve anything outside of roads.
