You must read CNN.
CA was one of the first hotspots. The politicians are failing miserably if their timeline is close to the national timeline! The federal government is for backing up the states, not forcing them unless they are really doing poorly. How was CA "weeks" ahead? Trump declared a national emergency 9 days after California.

Tracking away from banter whether CA dems handled it much better than Trump, CA seems to be trending better than many. Given its the state with the largest population by far and was one of the first exposed with tons of travel from China.

Apparently some believe the federal government doesn’t do anything on the days the President goes golfing or something.

Keep in mind this was AFTER China knew it was human-human transmissible but BEFORE the bullshit WHO repeated China’s propaganda that it was not.

you want to point a finger? Point it squarely at China for lying to the world, and at WHO for repeating that lie.Taiwan KNEW China was lying, said so, reacted in the extreme to protect their people, and yet the China-owned WHO ignored it. **** em

What planet are you people on that think the Federal Government has done a good job preparing for this? We had months to make preparations and to better equip our hospitals. Did you watch any of the early press conferences? Nobody in government seemed to take this seriously until Mid-March. Not to mention sources saying intelligence resources were warning our administration early on that this could turn serious quickly.

The CDC issued its first warning on Jan 8.
Trump held campaign rallies on:

Jan 9 in Toledo, Ohio

Jan 14 in Milwaukee

Jan 28 in New Jersey

Jan 30 in Des Mones Iowa

Feb 10 in New Hampshire

Feb 19 in Phoenix Arizona

Feb 20 in Colorado Springs, Colorado

Feb 21 in Las Vegas Nevada

Feb 28 in Charleston South Carolina Note: While Trump was at this rally, he referred to the Coronavirus as a hoax.

Senate voted to acquit Trump of his crimes on Feb 5th

Trump went golfing on:

Jan 18th at West Palm Beach

Feb 1st At West Palm Beach

Feb 15th at West Palm Beach

Mar 7th at West Palm Beach

Mar 8th at West Palm Beach

The first time Trump admitted the coronavirus might be a problem was Mar 13th. Below are Trump Quotes from Jan 22nd to March 17th.

Note that on February 20th the Stock Market Crashed.

January 22: “We have it totally under control. It’s one person coming in from China. It’s going to be just fine.”

February 2: “We pretty much shut it down coming in from China.”

February 24: “The Coronavirus is very much under control in the USA… Stock Market starting to look very good to me!”

February 25: “CDC and my Administration are doing a GREAT job of handling Coronavirus.”

February 25: “I think that's a problem that’s going to go away… They have studied it. They know very much. In fact, we’re very close to a vaccine.”

February 26: “The 15 (cases in the US) within a couple of days is going to be down to close to zero.”

February 26: “We're going very substantially down, not up.”

February 27: “One day it’s like a miracle, it will disappear.”

February 28: “We're ordering a lot of supplies. We're ordering a lot of, uh, elements that frankly we wouldn't be ordering unless it was something like this. But we're ordering a lot of different elements of medical.”

February 28: “Now the Democrats are politicizing the coronavirus, you know that, right? Coronavirus, they’re politicizing it. We did one of the great jobs. You say, ‘How’s President Trump doing?’ They go, ‘Oh, not good, not good.’ They have no clue. They don’t have any clue. They can’t even count their votes in Iowa.” “They tried the impeachment hoax. That was on a perfect conversation. They tried anything. They tried it over and over. They’d been doing it since you got in. It’s all turning. They lost. It’s all turning. Think of it. Think of it. And this is their new hoax.”

March 2: “You take a solid flu vaccine, you don't think that could have an impact, or much of an impact, on corona?”

March 2: “A lot of things are happening, a lot of very exciting things are happening and they’re happening very rapidly.”

March 4: “If we have thousands or hundreds of thousands of people that get better just by, you know, sitting around and even going to work — some of them go to work, but they get better.”

March 5: “I NEVER said people that are feeling sick should go to work.”

March 5: “The United States… has, as of now, only 129 cases… and 11 deaths. We are working very hard to keep these numbers as low as possible!”

March 6: “I think we’re doing a really good job in this country at keeping it down… a tremendous job at keeping it down.”

March 6: “Anybody right now, and yesterday, anybody that needs a test gets a test. They’re there. And the tests are beautiful…. the tests are all perfect like the letter was perfect. The transcription was perfect. Right? This was not as perfect as that but pretty good.”

March 6: “I like this stuff. I really get it. People are surprised that I understand it… Every one of these doctors said, ‘How do you know so much about this?’ Maybe I have a natural ability. Maybe I should have done that instead of running for president.”

March 6: “I don't need to have the numbers double because of one ship that wasn't our fault.”

March 8: “We have a perfectly coordinated and fine tuned plan at the White House for our attack on CoronaVirus.”

March 9: “This blindsided the world.”

March 9: "The Fake News Media and their partner, the Democrat Party, is doing everything within its semi-considerable power (it used to be greater!) to inflame the CoronaVirus situation, far beyond what the facts would warrant.”

March 10: "It will go away. Just stay calm. It will go away."

March 13: National Emergency Declaration

March 13: “I don't take responsibility at all”

March 15: "TODAY IS A NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER. GOD BLESS EVERYONE!"

March 16: "I give myself a 10 out of 10"

March 17: “I’ve always known this is a real—this is a pandemic. I felt it was a pandemic long before it was called a pandemic.”

And this is exactly why I told my wife how lucky she is to be married to a pessimist....hahaha. I prepared when the first one landed here.

The irony of him golfing so much is he gave previous administrations so much shit for golfing instead of working.

Well that’s fine. But you’re like agreeing with him while also condemning him? Weird.

It’s also just such a stupid point to try to make. You’re clearly only interested in politics.

Nope getting annoyed of sheeple saying that everyone in our current admin is doing a "great job, the best job"

The only people with any credibility up top right now are Dr. Birx and Dr. Fauci.

All that being said, incompetence isn't limited to the US as most of the Western countries are in the same boat. Nobody took this seriously until it was too late to minimize the huge economic damage.

I couldn't help but smile a bit when my wife hit costco 3 weeks ago and texted me "this is crazy everything is out, I am so glad I listened to you". I stocked us up on everything important in the last few months. Hoping I can barter some Charmin Ultra Strong for some Apple stock in a few months...HA

Why so much talk of politics and parties? We should be talking about unity within our families and communities and helping our neighbors. If some of you spent as much time focusing on those around you as you do condemning those you disagree with, we would probably be better off on the other side of this thing. Sure, both parties are stupid. Accept it and focus on what matters right now.

deBlasio tells people to go about their business. If everyone but Trump was so woke to this issue, why the hell did he say that?
in this politically ridiculous environment, had Trump put the hammer down in Jan across the country, the calls of fascism would have been unbelievable. He’s in a no-win situation

Why so much talk of politics and parties?
Because when this is all said and done, we need to hold those in office accountable for the good and bad, regardless of party. It is our duty as citizens to stay informed and be active in politics.

We are incredibly lucky this virus is not more dangerous than it already is (currently). Can you imagine how F'D the world would be if this virus killed 10%? 20%? This is a reality we might face someday and we HAVE to be better prepared for it in the future. We need to vote in leadership that understands that going forward.

How would you propose we prepare ourselves?

There's politicians, presidents, news media, and roksliders that need to have nice helping of crow.

"Victory has many fathers, but defeat is an orphan."

Reading through this thread, I really hope most of us aren't in positions to make public policy or decisions.
Some of you seem to be flippant about human lives.

Good Luck out there.

If the virus killed 10%-20% it would not be near as contagious as this one is. Viruses with a high morbidity have a low mortality and vice versa.

I definitely agree with this point here. Locking things down was a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation. That being said, I think we need to do an all or nothing approach. This pitter-pattering around with some states being business as usual and certain random businesses being able to stay open is just prolonging the hurt IMO.

While that is the general rule, in this case not necessarily true. Given the amount of times this virus can be passed prior to symptoms, it would likely spread well with a 10-20% mortality rate. If SARS or MERS had COVID's infectious properties, we would really be looking at a dire situation.

That’s dependent on transmissibility. Historically, that’s been the case, but you combine a transmission method like TB with the mortality of Ebola and you are screwed.

But it doesn''t have a 10%-20% mortality rate. You can what if all day, the mortality rate of this bug is going to come in around .5% when they work back all the numbers. Exactly what you would expect with the apparent morbidity rate.

I'm just a random internet stranger and definitely not an expert on viruses or macroeconomics. Just using common sense though I think overall the world needs to take a hard look at how we do things.

On an individual level, this hopefully is a huge wakeup call to people. People cannot depend on the government and this pandemic further emphasizes the reality of that. I am in a better position than a lot of people but I didn't have enough saved financially to make it more than another month of this. We lost a lot of our income as my wife is self-employed and was ordered to shut down by our Governor. People need to save more and not stretch themselves too thin going forward.

Governments hopefully now will realize how dangerous and costly diseases like this can be. We can't gut our emergency supplies and eliminate departments for infection diseases. This will leave us with our pants down for the next time one of these becomes about. Going forward we all need to take infectious diseases seriously and ensure we have the proper protocol, supplies, and leadership for the next go around.
