I have been asked by multiple people to do an ice and snow reliability eval between rifles/actions/triggers. Tthis is not a “test”, it is just a view at what generally happens. Doing a legitimate test requires more rifles and consistent conditions than I have. So… The rifles: 1). Tikka T3...

While I accept (and was impressed by) the scientific approach you took for testing, I do not believe the results impact that many shooters.

This feels like an efficiency and profitability move for them. They can probably outsource components easier and want to get in on the aftermarket that’s available. I get it, people like to tinker with their rifles, it’s popular right now. That’s easier to do with a r700 than a Weatherby action. It’s not exactly innovative but I bet it will be popular and probably will sell well for them

Ah this was not my testing. But its a good thing to have when talking about r 700s and their clones.

That said, a decent donor action for 750 is a good option to have. If someone makes prefits for it, they may have something.

That said, a decent donor action for 750 is a good option to have. If someone makes prefits for it, they may have something.

That's where I am at too. One can buy a Vanguard Talon ready-to-go for half the price, or a Tikka ready-to-go for 1/3rd of the price.

It would have been much cooler if they talked Trigger Tech into making a Vanguard-compatible trigger group, and then made a new action using that trigger group and the Vanguard's integral recoil lug.

I agree. Weatherby does a great job updating their product lines this is just another option for shooters.

I felt disappointed at first but I do think it’s a good business decision. I saw 750 on their sight for an action, that undercuts the entire clone market but at least 150$

It doesn’t have features I am looking for at the moment, but it’s a solid offering for a market that has standardized on the 700 platform. I’d be interested to see how the bolt movement is, if it doesn’t want to bind it very may be the go to affordable builder action.

The 240 and 243 are 7.5” twists. Nice to see faster twists in factory rifles.

From a business perspective, I think Weatherby needed to fill out their lineup with something that could use M700 parts. Neither of their existing actions are easily customized. They were completely missing out of the chassis market.

This action allows them to offer something that would allow me to build a Weatherby with the stock I want, the trigger I want, and the exact barrel I want. If the action can take prefits, I think they will sell a lot of products. If not, I think only the complete rifles have a shot at selling well.

That’s exactly what Adam Weatherby said on their podcast, filling a void in their product line that hopefully doesn’t affect people that still want a Mark V or Vanguard. It’s in between and it’s different product line more geared to the tinkerers

Vanguard is a Howa and Howa has a lot of what you’re asking for. I have three vanguards that all wear howa prefits and howa compatible stocks

I am of the theory that this is a survival tactic.

Build a known product with a known consumer desire for a good price.

Instead of building a 1940's designed action, and trying to make it into a 700 so you can sell them.

Or using the same Howa 1500 you have been using for 50 years and doing the old lipstick on a pig thing.

I’m not a fan of 90° bolt lifts or the R700 trigger design.

I was hoping they’d come up with something closer to the European actions with reliable triggers and smoother bolt manipulation.

It would be nice to have an alternative to Fierce in the US manufacturing market. I still haven’t tried the Browning rifles.

For the record I would have preferred a shorter bolt throw instead of the 90 degree they went with but to be honest it's not a big deal in the scheme of things. After listening to Adam Weatherby they are going after new customers and keeping their other lines too. Smart move.

You know they are going to do it right and put out a good product something the competition doesn't do. The new Remington's sound good so far too. Fierce and Christensen better step up their game and have better quality control or they will lose customers.
