Hello everyone,
I've got the sheep fever bad right now. I first put a deposit down on my upcoming trip about three years ago, and had to keep putting it off due to finances and a rotator cuff surgery. The guide (Dave Marsh) at Big Game Big Country has been very accomodating with my needs and now the time is nigh. I had my dates wrong, thinking the trip was August 19-30, but to my surprise the dates had moved over the three years (probably and error on my part) and the dates are August 7-19. Wow, it's like Christmas was moved up two weeks. I'm almost in panic mode trying to get everything together....the packing and repacking, etc. I've been on a couple of these trips before, but I think this will be different. In previous trips the horse or plane was a big supportive part. On this trip there is a drop off and a pick up with no repositions. I feel ready. Brooks Range here I come.
I'm planning right now to take my .260 left hand Stiller from Hill Country. It's shooting very nicely, and I've lost the magnum lust. I've got a large McHale pack that I've had out before that I just know will pull the weight, although the guys at Mystery Ranch that I've been talking to say they are coming out with a lighter NICE 6500 (Marshall) that I might be interested in (I just love the fit of their packs). I'll get lots of pictures for the forum

I feel ya Don. I fly out of Phila on Aug 7th for my AK sheep hunt. I'm already having trouble sleeping. Due to restlessness, I did a 4 hike with the pack last night after work. Got back home around midnight. Showered and then bothered my wife for awhile. Fell asleep around 0200, only to wake up at 0600 and bang out 25 on the bike before work this morning. Still have a knee thats nagging me so I am stressing alittle over my steep climbing stamina. Hurts when I put my foot down on a high step doing bleachers. Hate to do it, but my ortho is hitting me with an insurance shot on Weds. Need this pain to subside so I can smash it these last few weeks. Down 12 Lbees and I'll be trimming for the next 30 days. My goal is to get on that plane at 210. I was 219 this morning.

Starting to tweek my gear. Bought a scale today at Walmart and I am gonna do my gear list with weights tomorrow. I hope to post it up here for review. To say I am stoked just doesn't relay the state of mind I'm in. My life long dream of chasing sheep in AK is 33 days away. I'm trying not to rush thru it and I'm making a conscious effort to really enjoy every phase of this adventure from researching outiftters, to booking two and a half years ago, to spending a small fortune on the hunt and ultralight gear, to watching every video on the net at least 100x each, to buying every sheep hunting DVD available and watching them 100x, to designing my training program and struggling to stick to it while working 2 jobs and raising 4 kids. I think I've managed to keep my shit together and it is almost GO TIME!!!

To return the favor of all the info, advice and knowledge this site and the AK Hunt Forum have afforded me, I will be putting together a mega post when I get back. I will be taking a pocket full of SD cards for the camera and they will be full when I leave those Brooks Range Mntns. And hopefully the last card is filled with pics of a beautiful white Dall.

Best of luck and a safe hunt to all the sheep chasers this coming season.

Hopefully, water levels will drop prior to your hunts. Check Fairbanks Daily News Miner for update on flooding in that area and rescues off the Sheenjek River.

Perhaps all this moisture will improve grazing conditions in sheep country.

Good luck on your hunts.

It's a long time between now and Aug 10th, but no question the rivers are running high right now. Spend a few days in the W. Alaska Range this week, and even though the weather was good, the creeks were all still running hard.

This creek is usually a splash across.

Everything will come down fast with this weeks weather though.
