Ultralight Ultralight Rifles

👍
I haven’t regretted mine for a second. I want a second one for the inevitable day I burn my throat out.
I think we are gonna try some of the v max’s and maybe nosler ballistic tips. Were the 90 eldx’s too long for your chamber or just not practical to get mag length?

I got the 95tmks to an acceptable velocity. The 90’s should be even more manageable. Neither will fit as optimally as the vmax, but some powder experimentation while ignoring temperature sensitivity, they will do fine. I would expect 2700fps from a 16” barrel and a spicy load/powder.

6x45 portless barrel group buy...

If Ballistic Advantage were to do a special run on portless 6x45 barrels, how many are interested in buying? My contact there said it's a 25 minimum order.

If you'd like to buy one, please LOVE this post so I can tally the number. If we have enough people, we can work out the specifics on barrel profile and twist rate. I believe 1:8 and 1:10 are the options.

Again, only love this post if you're interested in buying a custom barrel.

Progress: 8 out of 25 thus far

It looks like at Midway USA most of the 6x45 full length sizing dies are backordered and or pretty $. What's everyone using for sizing dies?

You’d be wasting your money for this custom barrel. Buy a 1:8 20-inch A1 barrel and lop it off midway down the gas block journal. Thread it and you’re done. Voila! If you’d like less weight, have it turned down.
Thanks! I dont disagree with the premise, and if you are aware of any deals on donor A1 pencil profile barrels, that could be a good option.

However, I don't have the ability to cut/thread myself, so I'm limited to having a gunsmith do it. Cheapest/quickest I've found in my area (eastern Idaho) is $150 for the service. I don't think he turns down barrels though... so I'd need to find someone else to do that.

The cheap bear creek barrels made sense for this (roughly $60 for the barrel plus $150 for the cut thread... I'm into it about the same price as most factory barrels out there.) But if I'm into a barrel $150-225 as most are priced, it ends up over $300-$350, which makes me wonder if there is a custom barrel option out there that would get it done for a similar price.

I'm thinking a 12.5oz 10.5 inch or 13.5oz 12 inch 223wylde 1:7 twist in a stainless barrel would be the ideal SBR barrel imo.

For reference:

8 inch bear creek 5.56 barrel ended up at 10.7oz (including 5/8x24 adapter)
16 inch bear creek barrel was 16.5oz
16 inch shaw portless was 17.7oz

I just ordered some RCBS from midway right before Christmas. They were in stock but also about $90 with shipping.
Thanks. Spending that kind of money for 6x45 dies and doing a custom barrel order, I can't help but think the 6mm Max would be a better option in most ways (except for ease of brass conversion).

DIY barrel chop is pretty easy to do and hard to mess up. I use a hacksaw, then turn the barrel crown on a belt sander to make it square, then use a chamfer tool to remove burrs inside the crown. They all seem to shoot just as well!

1:8

It's not pretty, but I was able to break 2lbs milling out the slot for the side charging handle on this magnesium upper.

8 inch 5.56 barrel (SBR stamp)

2.75lbs including mag, red dot, and suppressor

Good out to 200/300 yards with 77tmk (2230fps)

Are they able to do an ultralight barrel like the Shaw was? 1:8 twist preferred

I use the forster 6x45 resizing die and I use the Frankfort Arsenal seating die set.

IMG_5441.jpegIMG_5442.jpegBolt catch isn’t needed without buffer setup.

On your TNA lower, with a metal trigger assembly - I wouldn’t dry fire trigger without upper installed with firing pin, if the bolt catch isn’t installed.

There’s nothing stopping a very fast moving hard piece of metal, besides this thin sliver of unsupported plastic…

Pretty sure it’s still plenty functional - I’m going to just cut down a piece of aluminum to fill the gap and use the roll pin to keep in place.

Given I already broke it - gave me license to start filing on mag well. I’m at 2.395” or so of COAL barely touching front of magwell, and still haven’t gone past the upper receiver. I’m thinking I can file everything to fit 2.4”.

If you look at my post on 121 that is the reason I filled in the bolt catch on my lower reciever
