Looks like you both killed with a rifle, but that bow looks pretty slick. What bow is that and what was your setup?

Rutfest was packing a Athens Solace with Trophy taker Quivilizer and MBG sight...

We ended up shooting both rams with a Forbes 6.5x55 topped with a swaro Z3 3-10x42 BRH

I'll second/third whatever you're up to now but it's crazy to see rams near spruce trees. Nice work fellas, I'm jealous.

Saweet!

Maybe a larger caliber/heavier bullet next time? Better terminal ballistics at those longer ranges. I know sheep are thin skinned but long distance, wind and the Big Brown Fuzzies are good reasons for something heavier. I've put a few 200gr .323 Accubonds through a few sheep and moose at 350-400yds.

Congrats on a great hunt. Too bad you guys couldn't close the gap for the bow. One year I packed a 45 Colt revolver and my partner packed his 270. First day of the hunt we stalked a legal ram. Couldn't close the gap below 270yds. 100yds is my max. I let my partner shoot it with his 270. Turned out to be the only legal ram we saw.

Not impressed at all by the Nosler Long range accubounds that I had loaded other than accuracy..... pic is of my shot on my ram, 140 yards, found the bullet right on the surface.... same results at 460 yards

I know that myself and others have had great success with the regular Accubonds. Including my partner that shoots a 270. It sounds like the LR Accubonds are constructed differently. It's good you brought this up.

Here's what Nosler says...

Nosler FAQ - What is the difference between AccuBond(R) Long Range and AccuBond(R)?

AccuBond® and AccuBond® Long Range share similar names and the same bonding technology, yet they are in fact two very different bullets designed for different applications.

The standard AccuBond® is designed to be a highly-accurate big game hunting bullet suitable for use on a wide variety of game. The AccuBond® Long Range is designed with the same purpose in mind, but we completely re-designed the AccuBond® Long Range to optimize Ballistic Coefficient and allow the bullet to expand over a much broader range of impact velocities than the original AccuBond®. Where the AccuBond® is designed to reliably expand at a minimum impact velocity of 1800 fps, the AccuBond® Long Range is designed to expand at a minimum impact velocity of 1300 fps. This allows the AccuBond® Long Range bullets to provide effective game-taking performance at ranges beyond which the AccuBond® would no longer reliably expand. It is important to note that the advantages of the AccuBond® Long Range don’t begin to play a role until the range begins to exceed 500 yards or impact velocity drops below 1800fps.

For applications where shots will range from zero to 400-500 yards, the AccuBond® is an excellent choice, but for applications where shot distances are beyond 500 yards, the higher Ballistic Coefficient and the enhanced expansion characteristics of the AccuBond® Long Range offer significant advantages.

Velocity should not have been an issue, bullet was still at 2100FPS on the longer shot and we had poor results on the 140 yard shot also. I do see your point for the big brown fuzzies though!

It looks velocity was the problem... as in too much. That bullet had too much rapid, sudden expansion. No penetration. High velocity and rapid expanding bullet spells potential trouble. This tells me to stay away from the LR Accubonds. According to Nosler LR AB performance starts at 500yds. Notice Nosler calls it "enhanced expansion characteristics". My 325wsm 200gr Accubond load MV is 2940ish. I've had no problem with penetration or expansion or bullet fragmentation from ranges of 150-400yds on sheep and out to 365yds on moose. I have no desire to fling a bullet at 500+ yds.

It's good to see the shots ended up being lethal even with the poor bullet performance. A guy would hate to have lost one of those rams for sure.
Again, congrats on the Double Rammy Whammy Hunt.

Congrats guys thanks for sharing. Truly jealous ! As to the long range accubonds your experience has me reconsidering my choice to use them in my 28 nosler. May have to revert back to the old tried and true Barnes. They've always worked great and expansion and weight retention have been phenomenal !
