Triathlon/Marathon/Endurance Sports Thread

Yeah I think a guy would want several hundos (hundos) under his belt before jumping into a 250 mile race :D

Completed my first Gran Fondo/Century bike ride this weekend. Got SMOKED by most of the field but I was still happy to have completed it. At one point I was going the opposite direction of the leaders and holy $hit they are fast! Not sure if there are many cyclists on this thread but if you are one of those faster riders, kudos to you!
Not sure if I'll sign up for another one yet. If I do end up doing another endurance cycling event, I'd want to get in a LOT more riding in than I did this year, and I was on the bike 2-3 times/week for the past couple months. I did rides of 50, 60, and 80 leading up to the race. I was appropriately trained to complete it but not appropriately trained to finish where I wanted to.

Love this thread!

I'm working my way back into shape after crashing badly at the Santa Cruz Olympic Triathlon last September.

I hit a road barrier on the ride and broke all the ribs on my right side, broke all the little bones off my spine, and broke my collarbone. Plus road rash, plus a collapsed lung. I spent several days at the trauma center. I ended up with four ribs plated back together.

Recovery was interesting. I was obviously laid up and lost a ton of weight early on, much of it muscle mass. I gained a bunch back then, lost some more. It has been strange.

I am tentatively training for Morro Bay in November, but that depends heavily on how the summer goes. I am back to where I can swim 1500 meters and run 4-5 miles, but have not been on the bike since. I took a big hit on core strength, so rebuilding that has been an ongoing effort.

Some learnings:

- don't crash
- if you have badly broken ribs, getting them plated is totally worth it
- you should probably have your collar bone plated as well
- I should have done more PT on my core earlier, but never to late

Glad you pulled through. Best of luck on hitting a full recovery.

That's awful! Glad you're back on the mend and hope you make a full recovery!! I can't imagine the recovery needs for that type of accident.

Reach the Beach? That's a pretty good one for a first. Pioneer is in a couple weeks. I never thought of centuries as races but rather as ways to work on personal goals. I highly recommend doing Seattle to Portland (STP) in one day. It's >200 miles. There's also the Seattle to Vancouver BC ride. I didn't do that one, but wish I did it at least once. Keep it up.

No, it was the Oregon Gran Fondo in Cottage Grove put on by Mudslinger. Route was excellent, challenging and pretty but was not impressed by the event organization. Will definitely look into Reach the Beach for next year if I'm still wanting to continue doing cycling events.

STP is one that I heard is a great event and that's on my radar also.

Thanks for the ideas!
