Maine moose?

What is a Maine moose hunt like? Is it tough? Are the moose fairly abundant and easy to find? Do you drive around logging roads looking for them or do you actually pack in and camp?

No luck for me either — or any one else in my family. Good news is by the time my kids are eligible to hunt, they’ll all be starting off with 10+ points… ha!

Not a maine moose hunter, was an alternate on a VT tag over 20 years ago.

What is typical actoss new england: drive logging roads, visiting landings and clearcuts near the road, calling, etc. Get a moose near the road where you can get a vehicle to it or close to it. Moose abundance depends on how well you know the area and what unit. Some have lots, some dont and require much more intimate knowledge of where to find them. My brother helped a buddy in Maine this past year. His buddy is a resident but does not know the area they were hunting, my impression is it was a b-level tag. They did not take a moose.

What is possible: depending on the unit sure you could pack in. Then you’d be on the hook for having the right area scouted ahead of time because you’re committed to it, as well as getting a moose out of terrain and vegetation not too unlike lots of alaska—thick, wet, etc. Not many people do that. In general (not just for moose) a big part of why people gravitate to hunting in ME and NH and not VT or Northern NY is the amount of area where you can get within relatively easy day-hunting distance of almost any spot due to the massively larger network of logging roads.
