I have a 2021 Chevy Trail Boss with the 6.2L with 63k on it and I am thinking about trading it in for new truck. I haven't had any problems with the truck but the DFM and lifter issues are a concern. The only thing I ever tow is a 14 ft cargo trailer for elk hunting trips out west. I am thinking of replacing with something I can trust to make it to 150,000 + miles. I am looking at the Ford F150 , Ranger , Tacoma or maybe Chevy Colorado. What are your thoughts?

Curious what makes you think a f150 or ranger is more reliable? Whats the cost of a new truck that may or may not be more reliable vs the cost of the repairs you may or may not have in your current truck? I bet the cost of upgrading would cover any potential repairs between now and 150k. If you’re truly that worried, you can buy an extended warranty.

I have thought about checking into what an extended warranty would cost. Also considering doing a delete for the DFM if that would eliminate the lifter problem that the 6.2 and to some extent the 5.3 has. I would not be getting a new vehicle but would be a couple years newer than what I have. Maybe with a little better fuel economy and not have to use recommended premium fuel.

Tough call! If trading for f-150 I would want warranty - which you can do on your current truck. So I wouldn’t call that a great trade.

Also the idea of keeping a truck for a long time is a nice thought but not realistic. I wouldn’t suggest spending extra based on that thought process. It could get hailed out or totaled in an accident next week. Upgrade when you have to or find a great deal first.

I’d price out warranty on the 6.2 for 150-200k and see how it pencils out compared to possible repairs.

I wouldn’t dump a truck that I liked and that didn’t have problems because of what might go wrong. Good chance it won’t go wrong and it will run good for a long time. And if something does go wrong it’s still cheaper to address the issue than it is to get a different vehicle.

That said, if you’re just bored with it and want an excuse to get something different you’re at a good mileage to trade.

I would dump any Chevy for a Ford in a heartbeat :ROFLMAO:

One thing about warranties though - once you're out of the factory 3 yr/36k mile bumper to bumper or 5 yr/60k mile powertrain (or whatever yours has), you're likely looking at an aftermarket warranty which are notoriously hard to get approved by dealers.

If you do decide to ditch the Chevy, I would get a 2.7L F150 that's under 3 years/36k miles and called up Granger for a CHEAP factory extended warranty (you can buy a factory warranty from any dealer, will not matter if they're a local dealer). My wife's 2018 2.7L F150 scoots around real quick and gets close to 20mpg mixed. It also has the 38 gallon tank which gives it a huge range which would be nice for hunts out west.

This all day. No matter what might happen including total engine or transmission failure, it will be pennies on the dollar to repair rather than go into debt on a new $60-$70k truck

Why is it not realistic to keep a truck for a long time?

I have 120k miles on my ‘19 Ranger. The gas mileage is worse than a full size and the ride is uncomfortable.

If I were you, I’d think about keeping what you have.

Why is it not realistic to keep a truck for a long time?
For the reasons I listed - it’s far from guaranteed. I lost two trucks within 5 years because people ran into them. Had one blow up and strand us (had 20k miles in it) had to buy a new truck that day just to get home (weird circumstances).

I would rather just keep this truck if I can make it another 3 to 4 years with it. I haven't owed anything on it for several years now and any replacement truck would not have a loan on it. After reading the above post I will be checking with a dealer about an extended warranty. It may be just a waste of money. The other thing I'm going to do is get a Range DFM module.

Isn't both the engine and 10 speed trans being recalled in those?

I'd dump it for a Tacoma, last year of the normal v6.
