Top rut moved into OnX search tools

I have been using Toprut since it first came out many moons ago. New Mexico has quite a few “specialty” and limited entry seasons for any given units. Since last year I was only having issues with the antelope units search criteria. However now that I need to start hunt planning for this year’s hunts, the search criteria in OnX has become unusable for my intended purposes anyway. I am not usually a complainer but the timing of this integration is impeccably horrendous! I also consider North and South Dakota, Nebraska to be Western States as these three states have Elk, Pronghorn, Mule deer seasons etc. and etc.

Received a nice email back from OnX Hunt. The usual marketing hype. I doubt that New Mexico is the only state they screwed up. Went to huntin’ fool and that was basically the same interface. I can’t really use either one. I have not seen another thread about it. I know it is a recent change like just a few weeks ago. In this state we have “specialty” hunts with primitive weapons and the like. Allocations for tags changes all of the time becuause of this “plus” crap we have to deal with here.

Toprut had all of this search criteria and now it is toast! All of that information is in the handbook and on spreadsheets but who wants to go through the stats on hundreds of hunts…I have not seen GoHunt yet. Willing to dump OnX if it is worth it and If I can import all of my map data. I really don’t have the time to learn a different system right now but I guess if I want any tags, I don’t have a choice.

Same with Arizona, they don’t show the actual draw data or max points round data anymore, they are just showing some hybrid percents which are close to worthless. It’s more nuanced than that, toprut had it right, now it’s ruined. Why buy toprut if they were just going to mess it all up.

What I observed was that apparently “huntin’ Fool” used to be (actually still is) integrated with OnX and the interface is the same minus a few search criteria (very few). I looked at Toprut to get my draw strategy for AZ when I found out that Toprut went “poof”.

Onx bought toprut, huntin fool uses toprut. Onx has discontinued toprut in favor of their own research tools, which are almost useless. I called the first morning they switched and gave him an earful.

@Sneaker has some valid and important input there. I sent an email this morning to their customer support (forgot it’s Saturday). I suggested that they restore Toprut back to its original state until the draw deadlines are over with. They mentioned that they are fixing some issues, but we are talking about the loss of major functionality that we need now. Just have to see what happens after New Year’s I guess.

Typically a big fan of OnX but like everyone else find they really screwed up Toprut.

I might have to buy go hunt or something to fill in for the lack of Toprut capability and that sure makes the OnX elite less appealing.

20 million capital infusion, then another 87 million; you'd think they could list odds for both WY Regular price and Special price draws. And maybe show the number of apps in the individual point pools like Steve Cordle did with Toprut.
I don't know who's leading the research tools group but clearly he/she doesn't know what they're doing.

I went back to this today, thinking they must have some things figured out by now. Nope- it's just as worthless as it was before. Total crock of shit. I'm very tempted to dump OnX for this, just out of principle. So frustrating. OnX is great for mapping and navigating, not for providing draw odds. If they don't want to be good at that, why buy up a great option and make it a steaming pile of crap? They have wrecked Toprut and pretty wrecked my opinion of OnX in the process.

My sentiments exactly! Onx has so far ignored my email suggesting that they put Toprut back the way it was. GoHunt and huntinfool won’t work for me either. I easily have over 700 waypoints that show all kinds of data I have gathered over the years so going to another mapping service won’t work for me either.

Not really adding anything to the conversation here, but I have also been super disappointed in OnX "research tools". I found that using OnX on one tab and Toprut on another was a very useful way to plan hunts. It's absolute garbage now.

Add me to the list. I contacted OnX to complain the first day Toprut disappeared. Research Tools is useless in the current form. I am not planning a western hunt for 2025, so I will give them this year to fix it. If it is not useful by next application season I will join GoHunt.

The OnX rep was encouraging that improvements are coming. I specifically asked for a preference point filter for CO and WY so I can see only tags that make sense for me rather than scrolling through pages of clutter from zero point tags or tags that are inaccessible due to high point requirement. She said they are planning a major update to the platform for spring 2025 which will include a preference point filter and other upgrades.

Still a very bad decision by OnX to eliminate Toprut without a suitable replacement. I love the OnX mapping platform - been using it for years, and will continue to. I'm not sure what they were thinking here though. Toprut was super simple and effective.

I’m with you on the principle part. I enjoy GoHunt for practically everything, except for the actual mobile mapping app. Really want GoHunt to improve the mobile app. OnX is just way more intuitive and tbh that’s the main thing I have both. Also, not sure what everyone else’s hunting groups use, but by and large all my buddies use OnX and sharing waypoints is just easier as a result. OnX does seem to have good Customer Service, I called about a couple things and turns out I was getting double charged for my membership fee. They refunded me on the spot so that was also nice.

Thank you all for voicing your concerns with our new onX Hunt Research Tools product. We have read your feedback and are taking it seriously, and appreciate the chance to fix these issues and give you the quality you expect from onX.

We are currently working on addressing the concerns you all mention here. We’ve added a link to the product for anyone looking for Wyoming Non-Resident Elk data, including special and random draw data, (https://www.onxmaps.com/hunt/wyoming-non-resident-elk-special-vs-regular), this is a temporary fix until we can get this data into Hunt Research Tools, but know many of you rely on this for the upcoming draw so we wanted to get it in your hands ASAP. On this front, we will be adding NM outfitter odds soon as well, which we know are currently missing in the tool.

As for additional sorts and filters like a preference point sort/filter, this is currently in development. For those of you that liked the view of Toprut, we do have a “Table View” you can use on HRT, there’s a view dropdown on the map (which we’ll be making more prominent here soon). Table view is also in the process of being updated to be even more simple and spreadsheet-like to mimic the user experience of Toprut more closely.

We ask for your patience, this is a new product and we’re working every day at making it better and better. Our ultimate goal here is to make a research and planning tool that’s much more in-depth and helpful than Toprut was, and we’ll get there, especially with feedback and help from you all. Thank you again for all your feedback and helping us make our product better.

If you would like to discuss other feedback or product concerns directly, please reach out to me, Paul Ronto ([email protected]) and I’d be happy to set up a call to discuss how we can make this product the best it can be for both your individual needs but also those of all hunters out there. We take your feedback seriously and I honestly would like to hear form you.

Will you be adding a way to select separate season choices in NM, CO and AZ? Also are you using the same method toprut used for calculating NM odds? Any idea how long this will take to make it usable, because in its current format it is not?
