Tikka mags: Orange, 223, flush, etc. project / future product

The 2.55 of Tikka length is probably sufficient as the arc is designed around ar mag lengths. However the fatter case provides less case head presentation in a 223 spec mag. A lil wider feed lip would likely be better for the bolt to have more case head to purchase on. This is just speculation on seeing photos of guys showing the arc cases in 223 mags.

Agreed - an ARC mag would be great.

So I took a swag at printing some 6 arc dummy rounds to play with. Seems like they function in the normal M mags fine. I was stripping them into my 6cm so not like I could run the bolt fast since they aren’t engaging the extractor.

What is the goal folks are after, a shorter COAL version of the medium caliber mags?

I don't have a 6 ARC barrel installed yet, but using my 223 mag, I can feed 6 ARC, but they snag on the front of the mag a bit (probably from sitting a bit low).

To answer your question - yes, I think I'd be looking at an M mag with slightly shorter COAL for 6 ARC. I was set on buying a Waters mag, but $180 + shipping is pretty steep.

What coal do folks want? Does anyone have one up and running already? It’ll be a bit till the quoted spring run but I can make some testers that would used factory springs (user to provide their own) in the meantime.

I had contacted Duramag about their flush fit mags for the RAR at one time and they told me that the ARC/Grendel mags had a COAL of 2.346”.
Just as a reference for you.

Instead of the M, you could make a stubby version for the BR variants. Dasher feeds fine from M mags, but loading mags would be simpler if they were shorter.

I would buy a flush 223 mag and an extended coal 6 or 10 rnd mag if possible.
At this time it’s very unlikely for anything that requires a different size spring, thus no 6 or 10rd mags.

I think we’re talking about the same thing, something between the S and M lengths (ie a shorter than M one). Right?

No Tikka 6 ARC yet (waiting on barrel), but have a Howa mini. I'm .020" off the lands and my COAL with a 105 gr tipped bullet (midsouth special) is 2.269", which is just about max for the Tikka 223 magazine. Not to speak for others, but playing with calipers, I think a mag internal COAL of 2.350" - 2.370" would give plenty of wiggle room.

Flush short magnum prob hold 2 rds down or can you get 3 in there? I get why Tikka did the single stack single feed, reliable, cheap easy to manufacture poly mags. But sako runs a 4 Rd flush fit double stack double feed setup like an AW mag, it's also a 3 lug action however. Pretty sure their Wsm flush mags hold 3.

If you can make a reliable and relatively inexpensive 223 mag. I’ll pick up several. And some Ms, as well. The orange is a nice bonus. I personally don’t have interest in extended COAL, but if they run standard COALs well that’s a bonus.

Been using 6-round Waters in my 223 and factory M-mags in my other guns. Both options run fine, but are pricey.

I have been shooting factory ADI 55gr in my 223 and ~2.8” length rounds in my 6cm from the M+. Maybe I have missed instances but I don’t recall anyone ever having issues running M+ in the place of M mags, thus why I didn’t really see a point in M.

I’ve been using the flush mag and follower for a prc and m+ on a 6.5 creed. I love them. Mine were one of your eirllier iterations and for me they work fine. I’ll be sure not to leave them in the sun, but for now they have been fine. I was going to cut down a rem spring to try to make it work but haven’t had time or need to mess with it yet. I did cut down a 5 round prc spring and it functions fine.

Just loaded up some 95 TMKs for my Howa Mini 6 ARC. 0.020" off the lands puts my COAL too long for a standard Tikka 223 mag at 2.332". Maybe an M mag with an internal COAL of 2.400" would be just about right.
