Folks, I have a job opportunity in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Any thoughts on the community? My kids are all grown so that part isn't an issue. Thanks!

Gotta to be as beautiful as grand junction. Anyway the wind does blow and winter is long and cold. Guess it depends where your coming from and expect in your community. I'd live there it's pretty good sized and has just about everything you need and fort Collins isn't far if you need a bigger place

They pretty much have it right. Windy, Windy, Windy! And winter does stick around. The past 3 weekends we've had 2 blizzards and heavy rain last weekend. It's great from June through Sept. though. Guess it depends on what you're looking for in a town. We do have proximity to Colo. and Denver for quick getaways. No state income tax and low property taxes help.

From traveling through there and staying a day or two at a time it seems like a nice enough town. I'd happily live there. No state income tax and low taxes all the way around. Close enough to Denver to enjoy the amenities of a larger city without having to live with all the BS. There's some nice neighborhoods and a relatively educated population with the medical center and state government. Not far from all of the Rocky Mountains you can stand. Wyoming residents can hunt the wilderness without a guide but non residents can't so less competition. Low housing cost relative to say Denver. It's where I was looking to move to until I decided I had it too easy here and I couldn't take the cold.

Wouldn't be my first choice, but not a bad one either (I like the conveniences big city life). Being a WY res you will be able to hunt wilderness areas and be not too far from CO and some pretty good hunting near Walden. If you aren't into ice fishing I'd recommend giving it a shot as there are some good options around Laramie and Glendo Reservoir has some very good Walleye fishing. Not a bad drive to Fort Collins for more of a city type feel and not a bad drive to Denver. Kinda depends on what you are looking for and what you are used to.

I think Wyoming is a pretty under-rated state. If it's a decent gig, I'd move there in a heart beat, especially if you're pretty flexible in terms of family/personal life. I have not spent much time near Cheyenne but I have spent a bunch in SW Wyoming, and I'll have to say, that scenery grows on you; what seems desolate from the interstate, isn't once you spend some time in it (and their is nobody there). That being said, they do have a pretty long winters from my experience and I think their trespass laws are retarded for a western state.

Cheyenne isn't great, but it is in Wyoming. You're close to FC, Denver, and Laramie. Not any good hunting opportunities really close on public land, but within a few hours you have some good opportunities for just about everything. Same goes for fishing. For a quick fix you could go mess around at Curt Gowdy which is within 30 minutes.

In this gypsies opinion, Cheyenne isn't too bad a place, I wouldn't have a problem living there again if I was forced to be in a big city like that. Decent folks, not too far from lots of things when you can roll down highway at 80mph . The benefit of being fifteen miles north of Colorado border is HUGE for big game hunting. You can also go east to Nebraska or south to Colorado, and get into some top notch waterfowling/upland bird hunting. The Wind SUCKS most of the year. You will develop a forward lean when you walk after a while, lol. I would recommend being in a more established neighborhood with trees for some relief from the wind.

Its terrible, too many antelope and elk running around and the hunting around the area is really bad also, so you will probably want to stay away.;)

Cheyenne can be a tough place to live. Not sure where you came from but the wind is a significant consideration through the winter months. As far as the city government goes its a little antiquated and can be very boom or bust depending on the energy sectors (currently in a bust). There isn't much for kids in the winter as everything has to be inside because of the wind although the OP said thats ion his past. The cost of living is still fail reasonable and no state income tax help.

Blackdawg, "big city like Cheyenne", that's funny considering most already live in WAY bigger cities than that, and if I'm not mistaken, WY has the lowest population in the US. I really have no idea about the particulars to Cheyenne, but WY in general is a great place and worth checking out. As some have stated above WY is COLD in the winter. I live at 7,400' in Utah for most of the time and it's balmy compared to anywhere in WY I've been in the winter. If you're coming from FL, you might not like it so much; New England, you probably won't mind and you'll love how light the snow is relatively speaking, but be prepared for a shit load and even if it isn't snowing, don't worry, it will blow all over the place in short order.

It has been a long time....

Genuine, imitation cowgirls during Frontier Days are probably still a thing worth looking forward to.

There are some traffic lights that are red both directions for about 1 second. Nobody stops, and if you try to force your left turn in the red you will end up having a head-on.

Sitting at a diner and seeing a photo being passed around by a game warden of a 250" or larger mule deer hanging out on a private ranch north of town.

Is the refinery still on the west end of town? That was awful a few times in the winter when the wind stopped blowing.

The one thing that chapped my butt more than once was the "if we don't have it, or know about it, then it does not exist" mentality. Being accused of fabricating my own Dodge truck parts in my machine shop got old fast. I wished I had a machine shop. Funny how a shop in Denver had no issues getting me the parts and after market bolts I needed.

My dad said they had a great VA hospital.

Wife is from there. I hate Cheyenne, but love the state. We spend some time there every couple of years. To be fair, there is a huge AF Base, and it is a small town. Flat, windy, cold. Antelope in the front yard at different times of the day. We live in my home state, and she would move back to Cheyenne in a heartbeat. I would rather live here and hunt there. Maybe buy a retirement home there for the summer months to get resident status.

The refinery is still there, and my wife's friends live near there. Denver is an hour away, and my wife has almost as many teenage/high school stories of going to Denver for shows and whatnot as things happening in Cheyenne.

I still have to hit up the brewery tours in Ft. Collins and Golden on the way through....
