I bent several bars in high school and damaged lifting machines. The coaches weren't mad at me, but said to stop doing it before I got hurt.
The reality is that unless you are going for a lifting record, the extra weight is probably not a great idea. I don't think gaining that extra muscle helps that much.
I don't think most people have any idea what they are trying to accomplish when they go work out, but the trainers don't know what they are doing either. Maybe you guys have a different experience.
