Agreed. There are definitely more advertising dollars spent on mono bullets it seems.

I’m open to the idea of using monolithic bullets when they deliver better terminal performance than lead bullets, but as far as I know that isn’t the case yet. But I am thoroughly skeptical of the “science” behind them and absolutely suspicious of the reasons dictating their adoption in various jurisdictions.

If I were selling bullets in 2025, I would probably be hugely in favor of anything that made almost all existing bullets illegal for “environmental or public health reasons.”

Ohhhhh I get the view point now. And I totally agree. Of course I couldn’t prove lobbyist dollar spending. But I don’t like monos, especially the “science” behind making them mandatory in all areas.

I’ve run into the same thing. Actually have $20 Lee collet dies specifically to get necks down on some of the thinner brass that doesn’t get quite enough neck tension from the honed dies.

I’ve tried to minimize how much they size too much with most of my orders and am moving to more conservatively spec’d ones that do require a bit more of an expansion step.

Issues using collet dies when the honed dies aren't tight enough in the neck? No. I've only done it on Alpha 6 Creedmoor brass which has thinner necks than Lapua. So far, so good.

Now that I have a Dillon 550 I might set up a toolhead for that brass so it doesn't have to make 2 passes through a press.. Decap, FL size with oversized honed forster, set final neck tension with lee collet.

Or if you mean issues by not getting them honed too big? Forster recommends spec'ing them 4 thou under loaded diameter. I thought I was smart by spec'ing them 2 or 2.5 thou under loaded neck diameter on my first 2 or 3 honed dies. Should go at least 0.003 though IMO. 0.0035 or 0.004 would be better.

I've migrated more towards the opposite direction because I dont like having to use 2 sizing steps and having to expand an extra thou or 2 doesn't really bother me. but.. now that I'm starting to load on a progressive, it really wouldn't add additional load time to have a collet die or mandrel in a different station. (thinking out loud here).

I’m about to be so much more knowledgeable than all of you guys right now . Because apparently the brass headstamp is what hits the elk and makes the hole…. And there’s 5 headstamps that do it better. All paired with Barnes bullets of course

Haha you aren’t lying! I get more of a laugh out of it than anything.

This guest was actually pretty good and transparent, despite JVB constantly trying to steer him in his preferred direction. That dude is insufferable for me to listen to just about lol.

Also the guest was mostly an elk guide, but preferred mule deer. So I was partial to him anyways hahaha.

Cliff was a good guest! I worked with a guy for a while that lived in Eagle, CO that had the same spiccoli twist to how he talks as Cliff so it seemed fitting for him to be from that area
