I wonder if I could even shoot my .45-70 enough to wear out the barrel. Big bore, low pressure, doesn't use a ton of powder. My shoulder might go first.

I don't think i'd want to try even if the ammo were free!

Probably could deplete the Earth's lead supply before shooting out a 45/70 barrel.

I would hate to have missed the fun I had or the things I learned experimenting with different ammo, chambering and rifle and scope set ups. I spent a lot of money but it was all part of this 45 year outdoor lifestyle. I wouldn't have missed it for anything. In the end I have found what works for me and satisfies me.

For me if I had to go to one rifle forever it was be a Tikka T3X SS threaded in 7mm08. 99.5% of my hunting is whitetail and I wouldn’t hesitate to hunt elk or moose with it. Range dependent of course. It’s just a fantastic cartridge that is under appreciated in my opinion. It won’t be the next 30 year cartridge but it would be mine.

Easy answer for me. The 6.5 Creedmoor is ubiquitous at this point. It is the "OG" of the modern, efficient cartridges and ammo is available everywhere.

At 77 I have already safe queened my JM model Marlin 45-70 Guide Gun and am now using my Ruger 77/44 for my deer hunting days. My shoulder just can't take my cast bullet reloads anymore. But man,what a beautiful shooter that Marlin is.

I'd most likely look at a Kimber Montana 6.5 Creedmor for a one and done rifle for everything I might hunt in the next 30 years.

The local shops near me have plenty of quantity and variety in 6.5 Creedmor.

Other cartridges that were once seen as very popular have fallen by the wayside, I went to buy a couple boxes of .270 the other day and they only had 2 boxes of 130gr Federal sitting on the shelf, similar with 30-06, 7Rem mag, 6.5x55.
A little more 243 and 308.

46g varget loaded to max COAL 2.810. Straight out of the nosler book, pretty generic but it works great and shoots very accurately.

I use lapua brass and shoot it suppressed.

Same load I use for 150 gn. Nosler Accubonds, and Starline brass from my 20” Tikka .308 Win.
It can give me softball sized groups at 300 yds, using a rest.

OK, what threw me off was your quoted velocity. With the same load, including Lapua brass and the 165 Accubond, I get 2,735 in a 22" barrel - 46 gr's of Varget has been my go-to with various 165's for decades. I could see getting 2,640 in an 18" barrel, but not 2,740 hence my question. Does a suppressor actually boost velocity that much?

Don’t know. Different guns will get different velocities though. I never chrome that load suppressed or before I cut the barrel. I’m guessing if my barrel was 22” I’d get another 80-100 fps.

I've used that load in 7 or 8 different 308's and never seen it go beyond 2,740. Pressure = velocity, there's no free lunch.

Considering I live in TN, I'm going to go with 6.5 CM. Light recoil, high BCs and SDs, good barrel life and plentiful availability of factory ammo or reloading components.
