I handled a 223 at Cabelas today and thought it seemed to go the full length? It was busy and I only had a minute to take my turn fingering a rifle.

I saw this product -

Seems like it might address the throw length concern. Has anyone used one?

I think I'm gonna send it! Thanks for the vote of confidence guys.
Iv got that bolt stop in my 308. Fits and works fine. Wouldn't really know it wasn't stock at all

It’s the cheapest option on Europtics and it uses a .223 bolt. It’s a long shot but if someone is looking to part out one for the action it’s a good option.

Actually not a terrible idea.. I’d like a 223 bolt, and I could find something interesting to do with a 35 barrel. Except now I see it is .355 not .357 and 1:16. That’s a little tougher to work with, but Hammer makes a couple options for it. 9mm-284? 9-08? 9CM?

I’ve had a tikka 6.5 creedmoor since 2016, I’ve never even noticed that it wasn’t a “true” short action, it always works like it should, that’s all I notice.

Kinda having potential buyers remorse. Am a Tikka fanboy (own 3), but recently strayed and bought a 20” HB Howa mini action (.223) on sale from Brownells. Replaced the bottom metal with a BDL kit and put it in a factory HTI stock and it weighs 6.5#. Barrel is factory threaded. Haven’t shot it yet. $625 spent to date. Plan to mount a thermal on it and shoot suppressed.

The remorse set in when all the online Tikka sales promos kicked in. Have seen blued Tikka lites with 16” barrels on sale for roughly same amount as what I paid. My gunsmith charges $130 to thread. Comparison:

Weight: Tie, very close
Cost: Howa wins, $130 cheaper after Tikka threading
Stock: Tikka wins, modularity
Action length: Howa
Action function: Tikka smoother
Barrel length: Tikka for suppressor
Trigger: Tikka
Magazine: Tie. Tikka mags > Howa mags, however, will be shooting off tripod, so flush BDL better.
Accuracy: TBD, although I am predicting Tikka win. (with thermal not sure matters)

In short, have a buddy with a Howa mini build in 6.5 Grendel that was my inspiration. Really like the .223 sized action, however if I had a do over, would have probably just bought the Tikka.

Just kidding, the Howa Mini sounds pretty cool.

The universal action is my only criticism of Tikka. I understand why they do it, all comes down to costs by sharing components and increased economies of scale. Doesn’t bother me as much on .308 based cartridges, but .223 length is borderline ridiculous. Look at the mags, almost an inch of unused space. Tikka used to make 2 action sizes, could do it again. Would gladly pay $50-100 more so that Beretta could maintain their profit margins.

End of rant.

Rant challenge accepted, with the bigger scopes in general use these days a short action doesn’t allow enough mounting length to adequately support the scope
Baby CZs and L461 Sakos are the worst, not to mention that their magazines are not worth shit because they are so short that they can’t accommodate decent bullets.
And if that is not enough they are not significantly lighter either
