Curious what barrel length I should go with when cutting my tikka 223 barrel, I don’t know what suppressor to go with either or thread pitch, I’d love to have something I could use for my 300wsm as well but I know that’s a jump and that barrel is 5/8-24

You can get it threaded with a shoulder added to it can be 5/8-24 but for a 223 I wouldn't since most 223 cans are 1/2-28. I need to get one chopped too, I'm leaning towards 18" at the moment and planned on 1/2-28 but will use a 5/8 adapter on it as needed so I don't run into issues later if I want to use a 556 can that is 1/2-28.

Anything over 6mm I'd just have setup for 5/8-24. $0.02

18 is what I am thinking as well currently

Mine is 18 and I like it there. Good balance of length and velocity for suppressed use for me.

Lots of good general hunting use 30 cal cans out there what would play double duty well on a 223 and 300 wsm. Sico Scythe, Dead Air nomad Ti XC, OCL hydrogen S ti, LPM Mach-S ti, TBAC ultra 7 all seem to be good options. My 223 wears an ultra7. Since you're wanting a can that works with 30 cals, id just do 5/8 threads (with shoulder) and not worry about adapters.

The CAT JL is a bigger can that intrigues me for max suppression.

I went with a 18” barrel and run an over the barrel suppressor to which keeps the overall length manageable.

If my current 20” 1:8 .223 barrel wasn’t one of the most accurate barrels I’ve ever owned, I’d go with 16-18” and suppress.

I’m not chopping and threading this one, but I do have a stainless threaded 18” barrel to twist on when this one dies. It will be suppressed then.

17". 2730 with BH 77tmk. Stupid portable and fun with a AB Raptor 6 can with the 3" reflex

I couldn’t decide between 16 or 18, so I went 17”. 2,788 with BH 77s and Banish 223 suppressor. I’d be fine with any of the lengths.

My 223 is much quieter out of my OCL Polonium 556 compared to my Banish 30 Gold. It's a little heavy, but it seems 223's really benefit from caliber-specific silencers. For max suppression, the PTR Vent 3 has me lusting but it's $$$$...

I have a 20" 223, but 18" would be a bit more handy. I like that extra 50fps though!

18-20” is a nice spot to be but it would really come down to what your going to use for a suppressor.

Big difference between a small and large suppressor

Iv got an ultra 7 30 cal and a 6.5 cal. I can tell a decent difference on the smaller aperture can. More apparent on a 223 it seems. The U7 6.5 dosnt leave me wanting more on the 223.

OP, suppressing the 300 wsm is going to be the kicker. I’d want a large volume suppressor for that. The recoil impulse between something like my ultra 7 and Magnus is apparent the more recoil goes up. On top of that more powder is just more boom to tame.

I did 16” and regret nothing.

Factory AAC 77tmk is doing 2630fps

For the distances I plan to use it there’s no issue and it is very convenient to carry

I got a stainless and had it cut to 16.5” via UM and they were able to thread it 5/8x24. 2650fps with aac 77 tmks. The next 223 I get I will probably get 18” but the 16.5 is really handy with a banish backcountry on it.

I can’t speak to length (insert joke here)…but check out Rearden Mfg for the thread adapter on whatever can u go with and the associated muzzle device. Same thread adapter attaches to both of their 1/2x28 and 5/8x24 muzzle devices.

Supposed to be all the rage for AR crowd. I have only used on 5/8x24 so far but will be ordering several 1/2x28’s hopefully with big Black Friday deals…

So in another 20,000 rounds or so?

Ehhhh, it's at 7,000 right now so we'll see how it does. The original barrel took a crap on me at under 10K which was a bit shocking. I sent it to Jussi at Sako to have a look and the team didn't notice anything abnormal, they did confirm it wouldn't shoot an accurate group anymore with the both speedhead and gamehead ammo. They sent me a new barrel and on it went.

I just really don't want to mess with a barrel that shoots as well as this new 20" does, it's sort of a freak barrel. Will it suddenly have accuracy degradation if I cut it down to 18" and thread it? Probably not.

It was in jest.

Oof. That is unusual from what I/we have seen.

I probably wouldn’t cut it either. Though, I do have one that at 14,000’ish rounds it had opened up to 1.5’ish MOA for ten. I got it cut to 20.5” and threaded, and it went back to sub 1 MOA for ten. Shrug.

Do you think it was from wear on the crown that caused the accuracy to slip, then come back when it was cut? I have always wondered what was the most sensitive part of the barrel for wear. The chamber area, throat, rifling in the bore or the crown? I just have always thought the majority of wear would be where the bullet goes in (throat area) and where it comes out (crown)? I will never, ever, probably shoot one out in my life, I just like to learn. I guess I am asking what is the most sensitive area of the barrel for wear? Thanks
