Suppressed 300 wsm elk / oryx project questions

I would say if you like your current rifle, cut and thread the barrel and get a suppressor for the muzzle blast issue. A shorty 300WSM isn’t going to cure your main complaint, it will actually be worse.

I don’t see any true “need” for a new rifle.

You make a good point on the "need", but I have to disagree with the muzzle blast assumptions having messed around extensively with both a 24" 7 Rem Mag and a 20" 300WSM (even having used the same suppressor on both). The Rem Mag barks more. GRT load data backs up why this is. The Rem Mag loaded to the same pressures has about 17% more muzzle pressure even with the longer barrel (at least based on the loads I use: IMR-7828 or Retumbo for the Rem Mag and 4350 for the WSM). This is just due to the overbore ratio and resulting slower powder preference of the Rem Mag. You can load the Rem Mag with a faster powder to match the shorter barrel WSM muzzle pressure, but you'll take a fairly large velocity hit doing so. Load the WSM with a slower powder like VV560, and it still doesn't exceed the muzzle pressure of the longer Rem Mag barrel.

Chop the barrel on the 7 Rem Mag back to 20" to make it actually useful with a can on the end, and the muzzle pressure goes up nearly another 20%. Either way you cut it, there will be a noticeable blast increase with the increased overbore of the 7 Rem Mag.

You’re banned from talking to my wife .

I run a 20” 6.5 prc and it kills everything just fine with a tbac ultra 7 or the dominus.

A handloaded or boutique ammo manufacturer loaded 6.5 PRC (Unknown Munitions makes some great options) or if you are a factory ammo guy the 7mm Backcountry. Should keep you above 2000 fps to +/- 600 yards and 1800 fps to +/- 750 yards. Both cartridges suppress well and should provide enough bullet to kill any elk or Oryx you pull the trigger on.

Does 6.5 PRC work well out of a 20inch barrel for my purposes you think? I def need factory ammo. I looked at 7MM BC but barrel life so crazy short.

The thing with Oryx is that you're usually shooting from a tripod. Unless you have a huge, heavy tripod, shooting magnums from them is not a great experience.

I think my lightweight 16.5" ikka 22 Creed in an MDT HNT26 chassis on my ARCA tripod with suppressor is my ultimate Oryx killer. Easy to spot shots, flat shooting for ranging error forgiveness, quiet for follow-up opportunities and deadly. But that's not an off-the-shelf option really.
Interesting. I actually do shoot oryx off a heavy tripod and it's served me really well over the years. I have harvested 5 oryx all shot seated off a really nice tripod with my 7mm rem mag. I personally like a bigger caliber for a bit more margin of error. All my oryx have been 1 shot kills so far. What suppressor do you run?

Buddy and I both have stock Tikka T3x in .300 WSM. Had the barrels cut to 20” and threaded this past spring. Both have a diligent defense Enticer s ti suppressor on them and are shooting his hand loads which use 168 gn barnes ttsx. Getting around 2925 muzzle velocity. It is a super fun shooting gun now. Recoil is very manageable. He killed an elk this year with his, 375 yard shot double lung. The bull made it about 30 yards and crashed.
Good info, thanks! You kept that Tikka stocks on both of those? I'll look at that supressor.

The 6.5 PRC works exceptionally well from a 20" barrel and will give you capability past your desired distance and allow you to extend your range as your skills improve.

Where are you seeing "crazy short" barrel life with the 7mm Backcountry? Granted, I dont have a ton of rounds down the barrel of my 7mm Backcountry but after have shot both 7mm RUM and 28 Nosler rifles (both known to have short barrel lives) I just don't see the barrel heat and recoil to indicate that the 7mm Backcountry will have a sub 1k round barrel life. To make it a more digestible round number, 1000 rounds is 50 boxes of factory ammo. Lots of hunters never shoot 50 boxes of hunting ammo in a lifetime let alone shoot 50 boxes of ammo through the same rifle.

The 7 BC should be dead based solely on the factory ammo requirement. 6.5 PRC ammo is readily available in quality offerings at most retailers, good luck finding 7BC long term. Federal has a history of flash in the pan cartridges, this one will be no different.

Hello. I live in New Mexico and hunt oryx, and elk a lot. I am tired of concussive blast and loudness of my braked 7mm rem mag and want to build a suppressed, short barrel, oryx slayer rifle. Oryx are tough animals and sometimes require long shots. My furthest shot so far was 350, but I want a rifle that can kill on at 600 yards as I improve my shooting.

I have been researching rifle calibers / ballistics to select the best caliber for this project. I am not well verse in ballistics or different calibers in general. My only two rifles are 6.5 cm and 7mm rem mag. I do not reload.

I am thinking 300 wsm with an 18-20 inch barrel would fit my needs. Who has done a shorty 300 wsm? How short is too short?

I am thinking of buying a cheap tikka 300 wsm, taking the action and barrel, having a gunsmith cut the barrel down, and putting it in an MDT hunt 26 chassis. Add a TBAC suppressor and scope and go hunting!

I am looking for any advice, confirmation that 300 wsm would be a good, or other caliber recommendations. Even better if you have hunted oryx and know what it takes to kill one.

Thank you!!!
It seems you killed 5 oryx so far and all were one shot kills with your 7 mag. Now you want a little more killing power at longer ranges and also put a suppressor on your new gun. You mentioned in your personal experience the oryx are tough. You also have encouragement from your spouse to buy a new gun. The 300 WSM as you know will
shoot heavier bullets which it seems you think will be an advantage. I say move ahead. You have a hell of a lot more personal experience in killing these critters than anyone suggesting these varmit rifles. When you started shooting them you made the decision to go 7mm. You never once mentioned recoil issues only sound from the muzzle break. You evidently stay on target and can shoot with the 5 one shot kills. Don’t listen to other folks problems that you don’t exhibit. That .300 wsm is gonna be great. I’d put some thought into the barrel and stock design. Good luck!
