Anybody have any tricks to preventing snakes in your yard besides the obvious yard clean, no debris, etc? I’m in the SE and have a house that borders several thousand acres, creek a few hundred yards behind the house, basically snake paradise.

I’ve had the house for about 4 years now and have killed more snakes than I ever have in my life. My yard is about as clean as it gets. I know the woods/ creek are the problem but is there anything I can put out to help prevent them? Appreciate the help!

We kill several rattlers in our yard annually.
I wish there was something to do to keep them away… but there is nothing.
We keep it mowed pretty short to fifty yards from the house.

We have a problem with copperheads in my parents yard . Killed 9 all 18” or better last summer.
Had a couple of close calls with them over there myself… one resulted in a gate being blown off the hinges after one almost tagged me that was wrapped up in the wire .

Had some pesticide guy come apply some chemicals out smelled like pickles … didn’t work.
We have 2 cats but they seem to prefer chipmunks.

If there is a solution I’m anxious to hear it

Used to have an issue with garter snakes at our old house. Honestly believe we had a hibernaculum (google that if you need some nightmares) yearly under our foundation because we had a pellet stove in our basement that would keep the concrete warmer then usual in the cold months.

I don't think any remedy will be 100%, but getting rid of whatever is attracting them, usually food, is a start (in our case, not running the pellet stove until well after freezing in hopes they'd find somewhere else).

Wife is deathly afraid of snakes, so got a bunch of ultrasonic deterrents which seemingly improved the situation since they don't like the vibrations.

A NOTE TO FRIGHTENED MEN

Don't be a pussy! Unless a snake is venemous or in your house, there is no good reason to kill it. "They scare me!" is not a good reason. In most states it's illegal to kill non-venemous snakes. And non-venemous snakes often eat venemous snakes.

So, remember; "A man bears up." Fight your inner pussy and just ignore non-venemous snakes unless they're in your house or in your car. ;-)

Put up owl house. I had issues with snakes and mice in the barn. Put up 3 owl houses and I rarely see them now. Owls nest during the spring and hang out as they typically have numerous roost. Easy to build and face them east, it’s made a huge difference for my yard. I had a copper head issue and the owls took care of them

Screech owl box can be made with a single 6” cedar fence picket and screws. Set it 15-25’ in a tree facing east with an open flyway to it. Remove all the little branches around it so they have an open space to fly into.

You mean venemous. But otherwise I agree.

No, when I say poisonous I'm talking about those real asshole snakes. :-)
Nothing worse than a toxic snake…. So much narcissism….

I’m a live and let live guy for all non venomous snakes. They are probably better for your environment than you are, they do absolutely no harm, control pests etc. Rattler in the yard will get killed, rattler in his yard will get left alone.

Are cottonmouths and copperheads aggressive? Rattlers are not, and 95% of people who get bit by one were fxxkin with it.
