I've gotta get a Christmas gift for a buddy and keep it to 50 bucks or less. I'm pretty much out of ideas.

What is some of the less expensive, smaller items that you couldn't live without in the backcountry.

What does your buddy do? Hunts what species, just a backpacker, etc.

We are both novice backcountry hunters still trying to refine gear list. We are hardcore whitetail hunters from Tennessee.

Adventure medical kit. It's a gift for both of you with the added bonus that he has to carry it.

I also really like

Outdoor research organizers. Medium and small

Havalon knives (even if it's $10 more get the blaze orange one. Replacements are inconvenient and more expensive)

Black diamond storm (also orange)

Nalgene holder from Pods8 (I just got one and its awesome on my exo)

Or beer. Everyone likes beer.

A good headlight. Many are made but, they don;t have to say Black diamond. Princeton Tec makes some really good ones too. For much less. Great on batteries as well. Just like the Black diamonds. ($30 on camofire)

A long handled spork is nice for dehydrated meals in a bag. ($8 on ebay)

I like a 7 inch Titanium frying pan as well. It is extra gear but, it works for fresh kills and trout on fishing trips. Plus, makes ovaeggs more affordable instead of buying individual meal bags. ($12 on the auction site)

USGI wool glove liners. Best glove going. ($8 on ebay)

Polyester base layers. They wick sweat like a sponge. Dries like you are standing in front of a fan. Warm for the wight. And, when carrying a pack, will dry after getting sweated up in the back, in no time while wearing it. Merino won't do that and, it is a lot heavier. (I paid $10 for the one I bought last week on the auction site. I own 5 of them too. I carry three while back packing for any amount of time. One to sleep in, one to keep washed, and one to hunt in.)

For me, WISE company dehydrated food. $5/ two serving meal pouch. Best supper's going that I have ever ate. And, it fills you up.)

Most of these are stated already. But, these are a couple of things that really make it go from a roughing it trip, to a comfort thing for me.
