I wonder why the 824 was discontinued.

From reading through past post, all I can gather is that Slik changed the number to 834 . It’s essentially the same tripod as the 824.

I believe cosmetic update is what CLNY told me.

I think CLNY bought all the remaining twist lock and SW had the rest of the lever lock version.

I may pick one of these up and sell my ST124 if I like it more…

That's the best way to do it. If you are happy with the ST124 for your needs I don't know that you need to change though.

The 824 came in today. Here are some photos. For reference it is next to a small Sirui T-004KX, also added a water bottle for scale. I’m 6’1 and it’s plenty tall enough to stand and glass. It’s Very very sturdy as well.

Mine was also delivered today, but it came with foam grips on two of the legs.

Mine had the foam grips as well, I cut them off. The foam creates more bulk without serving any function. Much easier to get in and out of the pack without the foam.

What determines whether or not a Slik tripod has the foam? I ordered a 634 a while back from Amazon, no foam. The 634 shown on the GoHunt store website has foam. There are also many retailer photos of the 824 without foam.

I didn’t even know I needed another tripod, yet here I am.

FWIW, my 634 has the foam, my 834 does not.

I cant be sure what determines the foam. Every pic of the 824 I've seen has foam, the 834 (Updated Model) does not, I think this is the only difference between 824 and 834. Either way, it is easily removed and makes for a more streamline package.

I’ve shot off my 834 just fine, and according to the specs I tracked down, the 824 is actually rated for more weight.

Mine has foam. First time using carbon, does it get as cold as aluminum does? I always left the foam on because it was nice to grab when it starts getting cold outside.

Not as cold as aluminum, but enough for me to leave the foam on. It is a noticeable difference if my gloved hand rests on a foam vs no foam leg.

This is my first Carbon Tripod as well so I can’t speak yet on the difference between Aluminum. But, I never hold the Tripod long enough to have the cold effect my hands.
