Yes, this auction tag buyer is the same silver spoon fed casino magnate kid that has bought several recent auction tags. His dad used to buy them, now, the oldest boy does.

Hopefully Nevada follows course and nixes auction tags so we can stop seeing how many rams he has purchased.

They actually started and run gohunt as well.

Am I allowed to hate him and the auction process but also be appreciative of the funding it provides and how much he contributed to conservation? It is a point of concern though in where the money actually goes. Nevada says that the money goes to the species but I haven’t personally audited it. Also is it like the pot revenue where they say it goes to schools, and it does, but then they cut funding from other sources so the schools get the same amount.
All funds generated by NV's Heritage tag program go into the Heritage account. The Silver State tag and PIW tag funds also get deposited into that account. Nevada statute mandates strict requirements on how those funds can be spent. For the most part, historically, those funds go towards habitat projects all over the state. As those projects are non-lethal, they get a 3:1 federal match which substantially increases the monies available.

The new projects are approved by the Wildlife Commission on an annual basis, and the Commission receives an annual report on the ongoing and completed projects as well. If any of the funds are not spend they stay in the Heritage account for future use. All of this information is on the NDOW website for anyone's review at any time.
This program started in 1994. These projects not only benefit the game animals that the sportsmen are concerned with, but all wildlife within their greater footprint. I'd heard the argument lately, in regards to some of our wildlife herds, that these projects have provided no benefit. But in the inverse, if NDOW hadn't completed all of this work would we be in an even worse situation?

If you are going to come on this tread and bitch about the tags start your own tread.

If you take away these tags and the silver state tag we won't have the dollars needed to keep sheep on the mountain. If you think taking 2 auction tags out of the pool to raise over $300,000 each year is a bad investment you need to do some homework.

Thank you!

It's been fun so far. I love the the mass on the ram SilveState killed, but we are looking at a beautiful low 170's ram that tips out like a Dall sheep. Really fun to be in this position with months until the general tag holders get after it.

Quick update. Keep turning up new rams each week. A few nice ones but nothing getting us excited to pull the trigger yet. Still have about 2 months before we would like to be tagged out. No pressure yet but its really fun to see what the guys turn up.

On a different note I play a lot of raffles and got a call that I won a 15 day backpack Sheep/Caribou hunt with Artic Red in 2026 from Rocky Mountain Bighorn Society. I'm in disbelief that the phone call was real. I ended up watching the live drawing 10 times to make sure it was real.

This has been a year or raffles for me. I've got 2 years to dial in everything for Dall Sheep and am excited for the process. Looking forward to pinging you guys who have been to the NWT before to get everything dialed in.

Curious about how long you’ve been playing the raffles and do you go big in #s or just buy a ticket or two?

Maybe 10+ years, and no I don't have the $$ to go big. I buy a couple of tickets in draws that really interest me or are out of my price range to just buy.

I always treat these as a donation into something I love doing and never expect to win. I will continue to do so with the idea that I'll never get my name drawn again.

The Silver State tag was 1 in ~10,000
The Dall/Caribou raffle was 2 in 600

The best random tag I've ever drawn I had about 6% odds of drawing. I've gone several years and not drawn a tag. Last good elk tag I drew was in 2016, and last long odds I drew an SD antelope tag in 2019. I apply for all species in NM every year for the last 12- 15 years and have only ever drawn 1 elk tag. I only apply for higher quality/harder to draw hunts but I'm pretty sure I've used up all my luck for a lifetime.

Another update. The other auction hunter tagged out on a ram we had found in July but we were holding out to see what else we could find. Beautiful ram. I'm the only ram rifle hunter in the state of NV until Nov.

With him being dead I'm curious what you guys would pick, a big curly ram or a ram with mass (like Jason Carter killed a couple of years ago) but not the same look. From a score standpoint you are talking 8.5" more for the ram Carter killed. The score is more just interesting it's not my deciding factor.

I'm ready to take this thing until Nov to see what else shows up and continue to look at pictures. I know this type of sheep hunt will never happen again for me so I want to drag this out as along as possible.

Be aware there are quite a few rifle hunts that open on October 15th so someone could shoot a ram you are watching then.

Units 184, 202, 204, and 207 open October 15.

Thank you for that reminder. Of those I can only hunt 184 & 202.

A unit has to have more than 2 tags in order for a special tag to hunt it. So 204 and 207 are off limits. I'll check with my guide on 184 & 202.
